Lead Pharmacy Technician, Medication Access Services

The Lead Pharmacy Technician in Medication Access Services supports UVA Health's Specialty Pharmacy medication access initiatives by facilitating benefits investigations, prior authorizations, appeals, reauthorizations, grants, foundations, copay cards (where applicable), and patient financial assistance. This role serves as a subject matter expert, point-of-contact for operations, provides team training and quality oversight, and ensures compliance with accreditation standards and patient access goals. The technician collaborates with pharmacists, providers, clinic staff, industry stakeholders, and payers to assist patients in starting or maintaining therapy across specialty, rare, and cell & gene (CGT) service lines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Daily Operations & Workflow Support
   • Lead medication access workflows across multiple therapeutic areas.
   • Conduct benefit investigations, submit prior authorization documentation, track responses, and address access barriers.
   • Support patient intake, onboarding, and refill coordination for specialty therapies.
2. Training & Quality Oversight
   • Train and mentor Medication Access Technicians on workflows, payer processes, documentation, and compliance.
   • Perform quality checks on documentation, submissions, and follow-ups.
   • Assist in maintaining standard operating procedures and team competency.
3. Compliance & Accreditation Readiness
   • Ensure adherence to URAC, ACHC, and payer-specific standards.
   • Assist with audit preparations and accreditation readiness.
4. Team & Communication Liaison
   • Act as liaison between the medication access team, pharmacists, clinical staff, and payers.
   • Coordinate benefit processes and ensure continuity of care.
5. Patient-Centered Access Support
   • Implement outreach strategies to reduce therapy delays.
   • Support financial assistance, grants, and co-pay programs.
   • Maintain and improve patient and provider satisfaction scores.

Additional Responsibilities

• Create pharmacy technician work schedules.
• Manage onboarding and retention of technicians.
• Ensure compliance for audits.
• Coordinate departmental projects and operations.
• Maintain accuracy and integrity in medication use.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required; Associate's Degree or higher preferred.

Experience: Two years of relevant experience required.

License/Certification: Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required; CPhT credential through NHA or PTCB required. Certification deadline applies for hires before February 1, 2020.

Physical Demands

Standing for prolonged periods, proficient communication, auditory and visual skills, attention to detail, and ability to lift/push/pull less than 20 lbs.
