Position Summary

To outline the qualifications, duties and responsibilities of the Lead Pharmacist.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Report directly to the Pharmacy Supervisor and Pharmacy Director.
  • Assume responsibility for pharmaceutical services, including retail pharmacy operations, in the absence of the Pharmacy Supervisor and Pharmacy Director.
  • Assist in the development, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of pharmacy services and programs.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and annually reviewing pharmacy policies and procedures to ensure safe and effective medication use.
  • Assist in developing systems for medication dispensing, control, accountability, and recordkeeping.
  • Assist in preparing and administering departmental operating and capital budgets.
  • Support ongoing maintenance and improvement of the Medication Error Reduction Plan (MERP).
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient, employee, and medical staff information.
  • Assist with orientation, competency assessment, training, and retraining of pharmacy staff.
  • Evaluate existing programs and recommend operational improvements.
  • Provide input regarding hiring, promotion, evaluation, counseling, and disciplinary actions for pharmacy personnel.
  • Assist in monitoring employee productivity, customer service, compliance, and operational effectiveness; respond to complaints and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with sterile compounding requirements, including annual competency and sterility testing.
  • Ensure staff have appropriate resources, equipment, and technology to perform effectively.
  • Assist with employee development planning and performance evaluations.
  • Maintain pharmacy equipment in proper working condition.
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Comply with all hospital policies, compliance standards, regulatory requirements, and reporting obligations.
  • Attend hospital meetings as assigned and serve as a professional role model.
Procurement of Drugs, Chemicals, and Biologicals
  • Assist in developing specifications and procedures for the purchase, storage, distribution, and control of medications, chemicals, and biologicals.
  • Safeguard all medications stored within the hospital, including controlled substances.
  • Assist in maintaining pharmacy transaction records in compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Assist in maintaining accountability and inventory control of all medications.
Pharmaceutical Care Activities
  • Assist in planning, directing, and supervising pharmaceutical care activities to promote optimal drug therapy.
  • Monitor and report adverse drug reactions and medication errors.
  • Ensure proper dispensing, preparation, labeling, packaging, and storage of medications.
Billing
  • Support implementation and compliance of the 340B program, including maintenance of required documentation.
Staff Education
  • Assist with orientation, training, and continuing education programs for healthcare professionals and ancillary personnel.
  • Provide drug information and consultation to healthcare professionals and patients.
  • Participate in patient counseling, staff education, health promotion, and disease prevention activities related to medication use.
  • Participate in continuing education programs, seminars, conferences, teaching, and research activities related to pharmacy practice.
  • Assist in coordinating pharmacy student internships and educational programs with local pharmacy schools.
Thorough knowledge of:
  • The Joint Commission standards and federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and codes related to the compounding, dispensing, storage, and preservation of medications prescribed by licensed medical personnel.
  • Principles and practices of prescription compounding and dispensing.
  • Dose calculations and preparation/use of percentage and stock solutions.
  • California pharmacy, narcotic, and related laws and regulations.
  • Inventory control and recordkeeping.
  • Program planning and implementation.
  • Pharmacy computer systems and applications; serves as a departmental resource for pharmacy information systems.
Working knowledge of:
  • Budget development, administration, and cost analysis.
  • Negotiation and cost-control techniques.
  • Outpatient pharmacy regulations and 340B program documentation requirements.
  • Principles and practices of management and supervision, including long- and short-term planning.
  • Group and interpersonal dynamics.
  • Effective verbal and written communication techniques, particularly with multilingual staff and individuals for whom English is a second language.
Skills and abilities:
  • Assist in the development and implementation of an integrated pharmacy program and assume responsibility for pharmacy operations in the absence of the Pharmacy Supervisor and Pharmacy Director.
  • Analyze operational, regulatory, and legislative issues and recommend effective solutions.
  • Present ideas effectively in written and verbal formats.
  • Identify and resolve complex technical, operational, and administrative problems.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, motivating, evaluating, and supervising pharmacy staff.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, physicians, patients, and external partners.
  • Conduct cost analyses and support budgetary planning.
  • Make sound independent decisions.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Effectively utilize pharmacy-related computer systems and applications.
  • Perform all duties of a pharmacist, including dispensing medications, preparing drugs, and recognizing incompatibilities.
Expectations
  • Maintain a valid California Driver's License.
  • Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Observe evening-shift staff weekly to monitor performance and provide direction as necessary.
  • ACLS certification is highly recommended.
  • Enroll in the California Board of Pharmacy email notification system as required by BPC 4013(d)(1).

Qualifications
  • Registered Pharmacist licensed in the State of California. Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of hospital pharmacy clinical experience and/or completion of one year of an ASHP-accredited residency program.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, staff is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and/or listen. He/she uses his/her hands to do computer work, write reports, do equipment set-up/cleaning/storage, clerical support, etc. He/she will be using the phone frequently. Good vision is needed to be able to read schedules, enter accurate data, etc. He/she must have good general health and demonstrate emotional stability so as to carry out the above-enumerated duties.

  • Able to lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, and move 50% of the day.
  • Use proper body mechanics when handling equipment.
Compliance Requirements

Complies with Chinese Hospital Compliance Handbook including Code of Ethics and all statutes, regulations, guidelines applicable to federal and state programs. Responsibilities include, following the guidelines and reporting suspected violations of any statute, regulations, agreements or guidelines applicable to all healthcare programs.

Base Pay Scale

Starting at $86.22 - $126.69 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
