Job summary

Howard University is seeking a Lead Perinatal Sonographer to oversee the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, ensure equipment performance, and uphold high imaging quality. You will manage patient flow, train staff, coordinate scheduling, and collaborate with physicians to support accurate diagnoses.

Requires a bachelor’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography, ARDMS obstetrics and gynecology certification, and at least two years in OB; BLS/ALS is a plus.

Qualifications

  • NTQR or Fetal Maternal Foundation certification advantageous

Assumes responsibility and is accountable for adherence to Howard University FPP Privacy Policy policies and procedures, as well as all applicable federal and state laws as they pertain to healthcare and employment.PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:Acts as the contact person for the Department’s Perinatal Sonographers.Ensures ultrasound-related supply levels are always adequate.Reports any equipment failures to the appropriate vendor to ensure timely resolution of issues.Coordinates day-to-day patient flow to ensure efficiency and an optimal patient experience.Participates in the orientation and training of new Perinatal Sonographers.Handles daily operational issues such as staff scheduling and reporting sick or absent employees to the Nurse Manager.Problem-solves with the in-house IT department with respect to any IT-related issues.Ensures staff Perinatal Sonographers are following imaging protocols and assists in implementing new techniques and protocols.Participates in the formulation and implementation of policies and procedures related to ultrasound.Participates in the planning and modification of patient schedule templates for ultrasound.Covers for staff Perinatal Sonographers during staff shortages.Performs all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician.Acquires and analyzes data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies.Uses independent judgment and systematic problem-solving methods to produce high-quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.Provides summary findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management.Prepares accurate and comprehensive preliminary reports on the Viewpoint system.Responsible for room preparation and clean-up, and equipment sterilization as needed.Assumes responsibility for the safety and well-being of all patients in the sonographic area/department.Escorts patients to an examination room or waiting area upon completion of the sonographic examination.Organizes daily work schedule and performs related clerical duties as required.Coordinates with other staff to ensure appropriate patient care is provided.Recognizes and responds to emergencies, obtaining assistance from and/or referring to physicians when appropriate.Responsible for protecting Personal Health Information (PHI) and maintaining compliance with Howard University FPP Privacy Policy.Uses the minimum PHI necessary when completing assignments.Promotes, establishes, and maintains open and effective communications with all members of Howard University’s Faculty Practice Plan.Serves as communication liaison between the physician and the patient.Completes competency and compliance training as assigned. Lead Perinatal Sonographer Faculty Practice Plan RevCORE COMPETENCIES:Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public; ability to communicate with people from various educational levels and backgrounds.Ability to deliver an exceptional customer experience in alignment with HUFPP’s expectations and policies.Ability to use good judgment and make sound decisions for the benefit of both internal and external customers.High degree of emotional intelligenceHighly organized with an ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.Highly collaborative, with a focus on providing an exceptional patient experience.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Graduation from an accredited bachelor’s degree program in diagnostic medical sonography or equivalent educationalbackground, current certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and at least two years prior OB experience or recent internship in obstetrics or MFM clinic.Basic Life Support or Advanced Life Support Certification a plus.Nuchal translucency certification through NTQR or Fetal Maternal FoundationCompliance Salary Range DisclosureCompensation Range: $120,000 - $130,000
