Job summary

Harmons Grocery in Utah is seeking an experienced Pastry Chef to maintain quality and train other pastry staff. You will prepare, bake, decorate pastries, order, receive, and store product, and manage production and inventory levels while delivering exceptional customer service.

The role requires strong pastry skills, the ability to read recipes, basic math for adjustments, and a commitment to Harmons’ mission. This is a full-time, on-site position with weekend/evening availability.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred; one year bakery experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and follow a recipe.
  • Basic math skills for halving or doubling recipes.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills.
  • Strong communication with customers and associates.

Responsibilities

  • Follows policies and procedures.

  • Verifies pricing accuracy and signage, especially ad items.

  • Prepares, bakes, decorates pastries for sale and back-stock.
  • Writes production sheets for other Pasry Chefs.
  • Mentors and educates associates to be successful.

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The purpose of this position is to maintain quality standards and product levels of all pastry products in the Bakery in addition to training other Pastry Chefs. This person will be preparing, cooking, mixing, baking, assembling, packaging, labeling, and decorating pastries; ordering, receiving, and storing product; determining production and inventory levels, and providing exceptional customer service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follows established departmental and store policies and procedures
  • Ensures the quality and freshness of all products and services the Bakery provides
  • Responsible for maintaining the appropriate product assortment and inventory levels for the Bakery
  • Confirms pricing accuracy and signage for all products, paying particular attention to ad items
  • Ensures the Bakery is cleaned and sanitized daily and meets the company standards for appearance
  • Delivers excellent customer service to all customers
  • Follows production sheets to ensure appropriate inventory levels of Harmons’ pastries
  • Ensures the correct amount of ingredients and supplies are in stock
  • Minimizes waste by ordering and storing ingredients correctly, being mindful of out-of-code dates, and rotating product
  • Prepares, cooks, bakes, assembles, and decorates pastries for sale and to keep as back-stock
  • Writes production sheets for other Pastry Chefs
  • Assists with test and quarterly inventory
  • Teaches, mentors, and educates associates to help them be successful members of the team
  • Provides honest, direct, and constant feedback to Pastry Chefs regarding their performance and areas of improvement
  • Writes the schedule for Pastry Chefs
  • Communicates openly and frequently with Store Director, Bakery Manager, Cake and Pastry Merchandiser, and Director of Fresh Bakery

MARGINAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:

A high school diploma or GED preferred; one year of bakery experience preferred; or any combination of education, experience, and training which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience preparing pastries quickly and efficiently with quality professional results
  • Ability to read and follow a recipe
  • Basic math skills used to half or double recipes
  • Enjoys working with, handling, and eating cake and pastry products
  • Knowledge of mixing, cooking, baking, and assembling procedures and times for pastries
  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures
  • Excellent organization and planning skills
  • Must possess solid communication skills, including verbal and listening skills in order to effectively and efficiently communicate with customers and fellow associates
  • Ability to professionally and appropriately handle conflict
  • Must possess the ability to accept constructive review and be accountable for one’s own success as well as the success of your team
  • Required to make logical, significant decisions using general, recognized skills and techniques
  • Must possess integrity, a positive attitude, be mission-driven, and be self-directed with a demonstrated passion for Harmons’ mission and commitment to working collaboratively
