Job description

We’re looking for a Lead P&C Field Technician to serve as a field representative, overseeing relay construction and testing activities within a utility environment to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with utility standards. This is a field-based oversight role focused on quality, safety, and project execution rather than performing relay testing yourself. You’ll work on relaying, pilot channels, SCADA integration, and more, helping power plants, utilities, and critical infrastructure operate reliably.

What You’ll Do
  • Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with client safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Oversee project scope, schedule, work plans, and overall construction progress.
  • Conduct and document Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) audits and verify adherence to safe work practices.
  • Participate in and support pre-job and post-job briefings to promote safe and effective work execution
  • Oversee field testing and maintenance on substation equipment, including relays (electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor), pilot channel systems, SCADA inputs, alarms, function switches, and protection schemes
  • Commission new substations and perform upgrades, troubleshooting, and validation of relaying and communications systems
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute testing activities on schedule and according to safety and quality standards
  • Support junior field personnel and collaborate with engineers and project managers
  • Interpret schematics and wiring diagrams; apply company and client-specific test procedures
  • Ensure all site activities meet operational and safety standards
  • Document test results and field service reports accurately and on time
  • Communicate clearly with internal teams, clients, and control centers throughout project execution
The Experience We’re Looking For
  • 10+ years of experience in commissioning, protection & control testing, and relay calibration
  • 5+ years leading field execution, coordinating testing plans, and mentoring technicians
  • Extensive experience with P&C system integration, panel checkout, pilot channels (fiber, power line carrier, etc.), and SCADA systems
  • Hands-on experience with data/SER/Fault recording and substation automation equipment
  • Strong knowledge of three-phase power systems and related protection schemes
  • Proficiency with substation test equipment, tools, and testing software
  • Skilled in interpreting wiring diagrams, single-line drawings, and elementary schematics
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Additional Requirements
  • Willingness to travel up to 70%, including overnight stays
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • An Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
  • Available to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays when needed
  • Able to lift 50+ lbs., climb ladders, and perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions
Bonus Points For
  • Prior experience commissioning protection systems in transmission and distribution substations
  • Hands-on familiarity with integration/automation devices and digital fault recording
  • Experience in both utility and industrial power environments
  • P&C Engineering or Substation Design background
