JOB SUMMARY

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required

  • Education
    High School Diploma
  • Experience
    2 years experience in an ophthalmic or optometric practice and
    1 year in a lead position as an ophthalmic tech.
  • Licenses and Certifications
    (COA) CERT OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or higher Upon Hire

JOB DUTIES

  • Analyzes, evaluates and coordinates a subspecialty clinical practice in the Department of Ophthalmology to include patient scheduling (outpatient visits and surgery), physician schedules, patient information, and communication to referring physicians, and related services.
  • Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with community referring physicians and UT Southwestern faculty; monitors, coordinates, and documents responses to referring physicians.
  • In coordination with a ophthalmological subspecialty faculty, establishes goals and objectives for optimum services to patients and designated family members; monitors coordination success and notes areas of improvement to include matters such as timely response to referring physicians, physician lab results, and appointment availability; makes recommendations for areas of improvements within the coordinating networks.
  • Designs and executes an effective system of internal controls to ensure efficient clinic patient flow, timeliness of lab results received and reviewed by physicians, and timeliness of referring physician letters mailed with notification to patients when appropriate.
  • Ensures patient flow within the clinical areas is efficient and effective to maintain synergetic faculty-patient scheduling.
  • Assists faculty in answering technical medical questions from patients to ensure all patient questions and concerns are handled in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Adheres to established protocols when communicating the need for an office visit to patients.
  • In coordination with Clinic Manager, subspecialty Ophthalmic faculty, clinic staff supervisors, and department Marketing and Communications Manager disseminate effective and timely educational materials to patients.
  • Assists Ophthalmological subspecialty faculty in completion of medical and insurance paperwork as needed for patients.
  • Handles patient concerns and obtains effective resolution.
  • May perform one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
