Job summary

City of Chicago seeks an Assistant Chief Operating Engineer to oversee operation and maintenance of complex heating and power systems at City facilities. You will supervise staff, coordinate with contractors, and ensure safe, economical operation of boilers, pumps, and HVAC equipment.

Applicants must hold a Stationary Engineer’s license, EPA Universal certification, and a valid Illinois driver’s license, with experience handling hazardous materials and compliance with safety standards.

Qualifications

• Three (3) years of work experience in the operation and maintenance of high‑pressure boilers, pumping units, and related mechanical equipment, with one year in a supervisory role.
• A valid Stationary Engineer’s license issued by the City of Chicago is required.
• EPA Universal technician certification under 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F required at application.
• A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License at time of application.
• Working with hazardous materials is required.

Responsibilities

• Assist in supervising the operation and maintenance of City buildings, institutions, or plants with large boiler, pumping, or HVAC systems.
• Assigns and monitors work activities of personnel in operation and maintenance of boilers, pumps, and related equipment.
• Inspect units to determine maintenance and repair needs.
