Job summary

The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Senior Navigation Analyst to advance mathematical physics-based models for extremely demanding navigation systems used in critical US Navy missions.

Join a team of engineers, physicists and mathematicians focusing on error analysis and system performance, mentoring others and presenting findings to government sponsors. A security clearance will be pursued as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or similar technical field.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience developing and using mathematical/physics-based models for military applications.
  • Experience with performance analysis for maritime navigation or missile guidance systems.
  • Experience modeling navigation sensors including IMUs, GPS, or navigational sonars (DVL, CNAV).
  • Experience with Kalman filters and/or modern system estimation and multi-sensor data fusion methods.
  • Experience with MATLAB or Python.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for presenting complex technical work to sponsors.
  • Willingness to travel to US Navy facilities and obtain security clearances.

Responsibilities

  • Master mathematical models governing inertial navigation systems.
  • Derive physics-based models for interaction of navigation aids.
  • Assess fidelity of navigation systems and communicate conclusions to decision-makers.
  • Mentor colleagues in mathematical physics-based navigation modeling.
