Job summary

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools seeks a Lead Multilingual Learner (ML) Teacher to lead instructional coaching and professional learning for ML educators, strengthening language instruction district-wide.

The role focuses on co-teaching, data-informed planning, and implementation support to ensure high-quality language instruction for multilingual learners PreK-12. Collaboration with the ML/DL/WL Director is essential.

Qualifications

• Holds a clear, continuing Professional Educator's License in the area of ESL K-12.
• Proficiency in oral and written Spanish preferred.
• 3 or more years of successful teaching experience required.
• Instructional coaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provides supplemental/follow up professional development for ESL teachers including observations, modeling, co-teaching and coaching.
• Supports ESL teachers in English and target language formative assessments and in planning the site-based ESL plan.
• Reviews student data with ESL teachers to inform instructional planning and program improvement.
• Works with leadership to create and sustain a long-term professional growth plan for EL services.
• Delivers current research-based practices in second language acquisition for adult learners.
• Facilitates curriculum development sessions for ES lesson design and literacy integration.
• Attends district ISD meetings and participates in district meetings as needed.
• Collaborates with district and school leaders on targeted EL interventions.
• Stays abreast of research; attends seminars and trainings to enhance language instruction.

Job Description

Job Title: Lead ML Teacher

Salary Schedule: Certified, CHCCS Certified Scale

Reports To: ML/DL/WL Director

Salary Grade: Based on licensure and verified years of experience

Work Location: ISD

FLSA Status: Exempt

Work Schedule: 10 months

Position Summary

The Multilingual Learner Lead Teacher acts as an instructional leader to build the capacity of Multilingual Learner (ML) educators through instructional coaching, professional learning, collaboration, co-teaching and implementation support. The overall goal of this position is to strengthen high-quality language instruction, promote academic success for multilingual learners, and ensure effective implementation of district ML programs.

Essential Duties

1. Provides supplemental/follow up professional development for ESL teachers relevant to language acquisition, SIOP, and best practices through observations, modeling, co-teaching and coaching; provides supplemental support through a differentiated plan for novice and experienced teachers
2. Supports ESL teachers in English and target language formative assessments. Supports ESL teachers and building administrators in planning and implementing the site-based ESL plan and SIP.
3. Reviews student data with ESL teachers to inform and support instructional planning and ongoing program evaluation and improvement.
4. Conducts a yearly district needs assessment under the guidance of the ML/DL/WL Director.
5. Works with ML/DL/WL Director to create and sustain a long-term professional growth plan that supports the implementation of services for English language learners PreK-12.
6. Provides ESL teachers with current research-based best practices in the areas of second language acquisition programming.
7. Facilitates curriculum development sessions to support ES lesson design, vertical alignment, and content integration with language arts and literacy.
8. Attends and provides leadership for identified district meetings in collaboration with ML/DL/WL Director.
9. Collaborates with ML/DL/WL Director and other district and school leaders to plan and implement targeted interventions for ELs.
10. Attends district-level ISD meetings as needed.
11. Stays abreast of current research and best practices. Attends professional seminars, conventions, and other training events to receive instruction in research-based second language acquisition and strategies and how to work effectively with adult learners.
12. Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by a supervisor.

Should the need arise where a position in a classroom is needed based on enrollment this position may fill that teaching need instead of the lead teacher responsibilities

Education/Experience Requirements

• Holds a clear, continuing Professional Educator's License in the area of ESL K-12
• Proficiency in oral and written Spanish preferred
• 3 or more years of successful teaching experience required
• Instructional coaching experience preferred
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable

• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
