Summary
Lead Medical Records Technician (Cancer Registrar) serves in a large, complex VA Medical Center with medical and surgical oncology services and a research program affiliated with a major medical school. Work of the position supports the care and treatment given to patients with malignant conditions.

Duties

  1. Provides advisory and technical service to staff regarding Cancer Committee policies, accreditation standards of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC), the VA Oncology Program, and the National Cancer Institute's SEER Program.
  2. Makes recommendations for program changes to the Cancer Committee and related leadership.
  3. Ensures complete and accurate data collection using coding references.
  4. Codes diseases, surgical procedures, and co-morbid conditions using appropriate classification systems.
  5. Analyzes coding consistency and resolves discrepancies through discussions with providers.
  6. Enters data into registry software and analyzes data for research and patient care.
  7. Submits data to relevant registries and maintains registry readiness for CoC surveys.
  8. Coordinates Cancer Committee meetings and monitors compliance with standards.
  9. Provides training and mentorship to staff and external registrars.
  10. Performs related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Position Details: Not virtual, no relocation incentives, PCS not authorized.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Selective Service Registration (if applicable)
  • Proficiency in English
  • Background/security investigation required
  • Completion of online onboarding and valid ID for employment
  • Participation in VA's influenza vaccination program

Qualifications

Applicants must meet experience or education requirements, including one year of relevant experience or two years of related education. Specific experience and KSAs are detailed for the GS-09 level, including knowledge of cancer staging, data analysis, and regulatory requirements.
