Job summary

NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter seeks an experienced Medical Records Supervisor to oversee a section of the medical records department. The role focuses on optimal resource use, adherence to local, state, and federal rules, and improving outcomes through accurate coding and reporting.

Responsibilities include supervising staff, coordinating cross-unit work, and ensuring documentation standards while supporting research efforts and policy compliance within a large urban health system.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in health information administration or health information technology program required.
• Six months of experience in coding/abstracting medical records in a health care setting OR one year with alternative qualifications.
• CCS, CPC or CMBS certifications with one year of experience may be accepted.
• Three years of satisfactory experience in coding/abstracting medical records in a health care setting.

Responsibilities

• Supervises medical record specialists and other professional administrative staff.
• Plans, assigns and reviews the work of medical records personnel.
• Coordinates the work of the section of the medical record department with other units of the department and/or health care setting.
• Provides technical advice on record systems and current nomenclature.
• Coordinates instruction of physicians, nurses and other health care personnel in chart documentation requirements.
• May code clinical records and analyze for completeness and accuracy.
• Prepares periodic reports, statistical abstracts and summaries.
• Assists in records selection for medical research and responds to inquiries as per policy.
