Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems seeks a Principal Mechanical Engineer specializing in Web Handling and Roll-to-Roll systems. You will serve as the technical authority, defining architecture, standards, and deployment across high-precision web transport systems in varied thermal environments.

You will lead cross-functional initiatives, mentor engineers, and shape the roadmap for core R&D and manufacturing. This role requires deep expertise in web dynamics and mechatronics, with a focus on risk

Qualifications

• Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field
• 15+ years leading web handling/roll-to-roll equipment
• Expert in closed-loop tension, winder dynamics, and substrate stress
• Experience integrating mechanical with motion control and power electronics
• Proven track record delivering capital equipment from concept to operation
• Ability to lead without formal authority

Responsibilities

• Shape R2R system architecture for next-generation equipment
• Research winding/unwinding technologies to inform roadmap
• Lead cross-functional strategy bridging mechanical design, physics, electronics
• Drive dynamic modeling and experimental validation for web defects
• Establish division engineering standards and testing methodologies
• Direct strategic vendor partnerships for sub-assemblies and drive components
• Mentor staff across the engineering organization
