A leading engineering firm is seeking a Lead Piping Engineer based in South Jordan, UT. In this role, you will oversee piping engineering projects in the mining, oil and gas, and water sectors. Candidates should have a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, a P.E. license, and 7+ years of experience in EPCM projects. The position requires strong communication skills, proficiency with engineering software, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. WSP USA is currently hiring a Lead Piping Engineer to support mining and metals, oil and gas, heavy industrial projects, and water sectors. This role is based in the Salt Lake City, UT office, with alternate locations in Tucson, Phoenix, and Reno also considered.

The position will manage all aspects of piping engineering, lead small to large projects and interact with clients, sub‑contractors, and on‑site construction contractors.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the department manager to develop, plan, evaluate, and recommend solutions for difficult problems.
  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals, discipline estimates, design deliverables including calculations, lists, drawings, specifications, and other engineering documentation using relevant standards.
  • Produce drawings, calculations, and documentation following good engineering practices, relevant codes, and standards.
  • Supervise or prepare technical specifications for purchased equipment.
  • Coordinate and interface with vendors and prepare technical evaluations of suppliers’ proposals.
  • Prepare equipment performance specifications and develop technical reports.
  • Oversee and check work of junior and mid‑level mechanical engineers and designers.
  • Give effective presentations to customers and communicate with the project management team.
  • Assure that all work on assigned projects is timely, accurate, and high quality.
  • Organize, plan, and coordinate own work as well as the resources assigned to a specific project.
  • Perform troubleshooting at operating mines, oil and gas plants, heavy industrial plants, and water treatment facilities.
  • Experience with slurry pipelines, tailings systems, concentrate lines, and mine infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of abrasion‑resistant materials and corrosion mitigation strategies.
  • Support design of pump stations and process plant tie‑ins.
  • Perform piping and pipeline system design, including line sizing, routing, and material selection.
  • Experience with raw water, process water, potable water, and wastewater piping systems.
  • Knowledge of AWWA standards and municipal/industrial water infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of pump stations, treatment facilities, chemical systems, and transmission pipelines.
  • Perform pipe‑hydraulic calculations using Excel, AFT, or similar software.
  • Conduct pipe‑stress analysis using CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, or similar.
  • Competent in AutoCAD, Revit, or other design programs.
  • Prepare and review line lists, valve lists, tie‑point lists, and equipment schedules.
  • Travel for meetings and site visits approximately 10‑15% of the time.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in at least one U.S. state with ability to acquire licenses in others.
  • Current NCEES record.
  • 7‑10+ years of related engineering experience in an EPCM or similar company.
  • Understanding of how mechanical and piping engineering activities integrate into complete projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with customers and vendors.
  • Ability to work with administrative supervision and manage multiple, conflicting priorities.
  • Understanding of the technical and commercial aspects of the organization’s projects and proposals.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and specialized software packages for mechanical and piping engineering.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry codes such as ASME, API.
  • Preference for candidates with experience in Mineral / Mining, Oil and Gas, or Water Treatment projects.
  • Must pass background check.
Desired Qualifications
  • MS Degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from an ABET accredited program.
  • Project Management experience or PMP certification in an engineering consulting environment.
  • Experience with Design‑Build project execution.
