Job summary

Quantinuum in Broomfield, CO seeks a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to own the mechanical design of a precision quantum hardware subsystem housing the core ion-trap quantum computer. You will integrate an ultra-high vacuum chamber, ion trap hardware, optics, electrical control, and thermal and alignment features; collaborating with physicists, electrical and systems engineers.

Responsibilities span from early architecture to prototype testing, FEM modeling, ICD maintenance, and mentoring junior

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• 5+ years in cryogenic/vacuum/physics-related roles preferred.
• U.S. citizen or eligible for security clearances due to government requirements.
• U.S. person: citizen, permanent resident, or green card holder.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical development of precision quantum hardware assemblies from concept to procurement.
• Design interfaces, mounting structures, and housings for complex subsystems.
• Develop precision environmental control systems and tolerances.
• Maintain interface control documents (ICDs) with subsystem leads.
• Derive subsystem requirements from higher-level requirements.
• Maintain version-controlled CAD models and BOMs.
• Collaborate with validation teams to build and test prototypes.
• Create FEM models to predict performance (structural, thermal, etc.).
• Collaborate with scientists and engineers to optimize designs.
• Work with manufacturing to optimize lead time, SWAP-C, and uptime.
• Mentor junior engineers and communicate proposals to teams.
