Job description

Job Overview

A Lead Mechanic performs quality maintenance, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, disassembly, inspections, rebuilds, and reassembly on diesel, electrical, hydraulic and air‑operated components and equipment such as engines, powertrains, hydraulics, fuel systems, power generation, electrical codes, etc., all related to mining equipment such as jumbo drills, haul trucks, bolters, loaders, dozers, etc. This includes mobile equipment, hoists, compressors, drills, and miscellaneous equipment of a similar nature. The Lead Mechanic also provides supervision, training, guidance and mentoring to other mechanics and less‑experienced mechanics.

Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions by utilizing service manuals, parts books, electrical and hydraulic manuals.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, general/major maintenance and repairs, diagnostics, inspection, disassembly/assembly according to shop work orders.
  • Test repaired equipment to ensure performance and that work meets manufacturer specifications.
  • Operate various equipment including forklifts, aerial lifts, and service trucks.
  • Perform and document detailed repair estimates, including parts and labor requirements.
  • Be familiar with underground mobile equipment braking regulations, testing and adjustment.
  • Comply with all Redpath USA Corporation and owner safety regulations and procedures.
  • Safely operate and move mine equipment for servicing.
  • Understand confined space, fall protection, equipment isolation, and basic welding standards and procedures.
  • Order parts accurately and complete all necessary paperwork.
  • Ensure planned maintenance is carried out per the maintenance schedule.
  • Perform basic welding and cutting.
  • Perform safe and timely emergency repairs to equipment.
  • Ensure spares and tools are available and serviceable.
  • Keep work areas safe and free of hazards and perform field level risk assessments.
  • Follow proper procedures to ensure safety and control equipment damage.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less‑experienced mechanics.
  • Ensure workers are qualified and capable of safely performing assigned work.
  • Assists in hiring, evaluation, commendation, disciplinary action and dismissals of supervised staff, if applicable.
  • Comprehend written and verbal instructions to perform duties safely and efficiently.
  • Comply with daily, weekly and monthly safety directives, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality with respect to Redpath and client information.
  • Follow Redpath's policies and procedures as detailed in the appropriate manuals, handbooks, directives and SOPs.
  • Work in excess of 40 hours a week, overtime, day and nights, weekends, holidays and shift rotations.
  • Comply with Redpath core competencies.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Duties & Responsibilities

Education and Qualifications
  • High School, GED, and/or higher education.
  • Recognized trade certificate in maintenance or repair field preferred.
Work Experience
  • Documented maintenance experience of 7 years, concentrating on heavy equipment maintenance of mining equipment such as haul trucks, dozers, jumbo drill, hydraulic shovels, motor graders, front end loaders.
  • Minimum 2 years of underground mining experience.
  • Preferred 2 years supervisory and training experience.
  • Full working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Strong leadership, managerial, training and communication skills.
  • Eligible for company vehicle usage: must possess a current state driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Proficient with computers and associated software.
Knowledge Required
  • Read and understand materials such as service and parts manuals, technical bulletins and related articles.
  • Extensive technical/mechanical knowledge of heavy equipment in mining.
  • Read and understand electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Read and interpret basic electrical instruments and testers.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills, both verbal and written.
  • Use and understand engine/powertrain diagnostic software, handheld and computer based.
  • Strong knowledge in braking systems, steering systems, suspension systems, payload systems, compressed air systems, engine tune‑up requirements, electronic engine controls, drive trains and electric drive haul truck braking/dynamic systems.
  • Work knowledge of all tools and equipment necessary for Maintenance Department.
  • Read and disseminate information from schematics and maintenance manuals.
  • Experience with OEM maintenance repair manuals and schematics.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations pertaining to equipment.
  • High attention to detail, neatness and accuracy.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively.
Other Requirements
  • Pass background clearance, drug screening and physical.
  • Possess a mechanic’s basic set of hand tools up to two‑inch minimum.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Prepare written reports and correspondence.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing effectively.
  • Work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
