Overview
Job Description A Lead Mechanic performs quality maintenance, preventative maintenance, diagnosis, disassembly, inspections, rebuilds, and reassembly to diesel, electrical, hydraulic and air operated components and equipment such as engines, power trains, hydraulics, fuel systems, power generation, electrical codes, etc. all related to mining equipment such as Jumbo drills, haul trucks, bolters, loaders, dozers, etc. This work includes mobile equipment, hoist, compressors, drills and miscellaneous equipment of a similar nature. The Lead Mechanic will provide supervision, training, guidance and mentoring to other mechanics and less experienced mechanics.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions by utilizing service manuals, parts books, electrical, hydraulic manuals.
- Perform preventative maintenance, general/major maintenance and repairs, diagnostics, inspection, disassembly/assembly according to requirements in shop Work Orders.
- Test repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure that work meets manufacturer specifications.
- Operate various equipment including forklifts, aerial lifts, and service trucks.
- Perform and document detailed repair estimates accurately including parts and labor requirements.
- Familiar with underground mobile equipment braking regulations, testing and adjusting components.
- Comply with all Redpath USA Corporation and Owners safety regulations and procedures.
- Safely operate and move various mine equipment for servicing.
- Understand confined space, fall protection, equipment isolation, and basic welding standards and procedures.
- Order parts accurately, and complete all necessary paperwork involved.
- Ensure planned maintenance is carried out per the maintenance schedule.
- Perform basic welding and cutting; perform safe and timely emergency repairs to equipment.
- Ensure spares and tools are available and serviceable.
- Keep work areas safe and free of hazards. Perform Field Level Risk Assessments.
- Follow proper procedures to ensure safety and to control equipment damage.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced mechanics.
- Ensure workers are qualified and capable of safely performing assigned work.
- Assist in hiring, evaluation, commendation, disciplinary action, and dismissals regarding supervised staff, if applicable.
- Comprehend written and verbal instructions to perform duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Comply with daily, weekly and monthly safety directives, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality with respect to Redpath and client information.
- Comply with Redpath’s Policies and Procedures as detailed in the appropriate manuals, handbooks, directives, SOPs.
- Able to work in excess of 40 hours a week, overtime, day and night shifts, weekends, holidays and shift rotations.
- Compliance with Redpath Core Competencies is an essential duty and responsibility.

Qualifications
Education
- High School, GED, and/or higher education.
- Recognized trade certificate, in the maintenance or repair field preferred.
Work Experience
- Documented maintenance experience of 7 years in heavy equipment maintenance of mining equipment (haul trucks, dozers, jumbo drill, hydraulic shovels, motor graders, front end loaders, etc.).
- Requires minimum 2 years experience in underground mining.
- Preferred 2 years supervisory and training experience.
- Full working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Excellent organization and time management skills; strong leadership, managerial, training and communication skills.
- If required to operate a company vehicle, must meet requirements to be an eligible user of company vehicles; must possess a current State Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
- Proficient in the use of computers and associated software.
Knowledge Required
- Ability to read and understand materials commonly used in product service and maintenance (service and parts manuals, technical bulletins, etc.).
- Extensive technical knowledge of heavy equipment related to mining.
- Capable of reading and understanding electrical drawings and schematics; reading and interpreting basic electrical instruments and testers.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to use Engine/Powertrain Diagnostic Software (handheld and computer-based).
- Strong knowledge in braking, steering, suspension, payload, compressed air systems, engine tune-up requirements, electronic engine controls, drive trains and electric drive haul truck braking/dynamic systems.
- Working knowledge of tools and equipment necessary for maintenance.
- Capable of reading and disseminating information from schematics and maintenance manuals; experience with OEM manuals and schematics.
- Knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations pertaining to equipment; high attention to detail, neatness and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Other Requirements
- Ability to pass background clearance, drug screening and physical.
- Mechanics basic set of hand tools up to a two-inch minimum.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; prepare written reports and correspondence; communicate effectively.
- Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work in English and follow safety and operational procedures.
