Job summary

Student Transportation of America, Inc (STA) is seeking a Lead Mechanic in Mount Joy, PA. This full-time role focuses on diagnosing and repairing buses, maintaining safety and reliability, and performing complex maintenance tasks across engine, electrical, and system components.

The position requires 5+ years in maintenance and 3+ years as a mechanic, with CDL/State Inspection license readiness preferred. Sign-on bonus and comprehensive benefits are offered to qualified applicants.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of maintenance experience; manager experience in school transportation or related field.
  • 3+ years’ experience as a mechanic in transportation, school bus fleet, automotive or heavy equipment.
  • Air Brake and diagnostic experience.
  • Willingness to obtain a CDL and State Inspection license.
  • ASE certification is a plus.
  • Valid CDL license is a plus.
  • Tools to perform maintenance work is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and repairs buses focusing on major, complex problems including engine, transmission, electrical and mechanical defects.
  • Performs upgrades and/or modifications on bus systems and equipment.
  • Inspects and repairs bus equipment, replaces parts as required.
  • Researches bus systems and OEM characteristics for all buses.
  • Executes in-house and road-call repairs using various tools and equipment.
  • Tests buses for proper working order and documents all work in RTA Software.
  • Utilizes CMMS to diagnose trends in parts usage and labor costs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains safety and a clean, productive work environment.

Job Title: Lead Mechanic

Reports To: Shop Manager

Location: Mount Joy, PA (Hempfield, PA)

Job Type: Full-Time, Monday-Friday

Pay Range: Based on experience.

Job Summary:

A Maintenance Repair Technician diagnoses and repairs buses specifically concentrating on major complicated/complex problems and inspections. Class – A Maintenance Repair Technician must be proficient and able to perform all aspects of the B and C mechanic positions. STA encourages all Class – A Maintenance Repair Technicians to seek and maintain Master ASE certification, All work performed must be of the highest quality ensuring vehicles are reliable and safe. Work in such a manner that promotes a safe and productive work environment.

Essential Job Duties and Functions:

  • Diagnoses and repairs buses specifically concentrating on major complicated/complex problems including engine, transmission, electrical and mechanical defects
  • Performs upgrades and/or modifications on bus systems and equipment
  • Cleans, repairs, and replaces bus equipment as required
  • Research bus systems and special manufacturing characteristics for all buses
  • Performs both in-house and road call bus repairs using various hand, power, pneumatic, machine (precision) and machinery tools
  • Tests buses for proper working order
  • Completely document all work performed in RTA Software
  • Utilize CMMS when diagnosing trends in parts usage and labor cost relating to vehicle performance to ensure repairs are completed properly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Repairing vehicles require physical dexterity and exertion and heavy lifting.

Support and assist Technicians:

  • Answers questions and assist by offering professional information.
  • When B or C class technicians are assigned to work with A class technicians the A class technicians are to provide support pertaining to diagnosing and operational theory for specific job and/or task when appropriate

Performs upgrades and/or modifications on bus systems and equipment:

  • Work with OEM’s on upgrades and campaigns on vehicles
  • Installs, equips and or modifies buses as requested
  • Tracks and reports information concerning performance as required
  • Adjusts upgrade and/or modification on bus system as required

Performs preventative maintenance on buses as needed:

  • Perform inspections on all types of buses and repairs systems/parts when needed.
  • Uses preventive maintenance check list to verify performance
  • Repairs and inspections involve the engine, battery, lights, gauges and controls, sensitive edges, safety equipment, all interior components, transmissions, tires, breaks, undercarriage, power steering, fluids and filters and all other electrical and mechanical bus components

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of maintenance experience; manager experience working in school transportation industry, transportation or related field
  • 3+ years’ experience as a mechanic, technician in transportation, school bus fleet, automotive or heavy equipment environment
  • Air Brake and diagnostic experience
  • Willingness to obtain a CDL and State Inspection license
  • ASE certification is a plus!
  • Valid CDL license is a plus!
  • Tools to perform maintenance work is a plus!
