Job summary

Nordex Group in Brookfield, CT is seeking an experienced Lead Machinist / Supervisor to lead our machine shop on the shop floor. This hands-on role involves setting up and operating CNC and manual machines, troubleshooting, and training machinists while upholding Nordex's quality standards.

You will supervise daily shop activities, ensure production priorities are met, work with Engineering on tight tolerances, maintain safety and organization, and drive continuous improvement in machining

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years in tight-tolerance machining with CNC and manual centers.
  • Supervisory or team lead experience in manufacturing.
  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and inspection techniques.
  • Proficiency with micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and similar tools.
  • Experience with G-code and conversational programming.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Experience collaborating with Engineering and Quality teams.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce shop standards, policies, and safety on the floor.

Job description

Nordex, Inc. is an engineering-driven company with major operations in gear manufacturing, CNC machining, and assemblies for the medical device, robotics, automation, aerospace, and defense industries. We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and hands-on Lead Machinist / Supervisor to lead our machine shop.

This is ahands-on machining leadership position: the successful candidate will spend significant time on the shop floor setting up and operating CNC and manual machines, troubleshooting machining problems, training machinists, and ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Nordex's quality standards.

In addition to hands-on machining responsibilities, the Lead Machinist / Supervisor will oversee the day-to-day activities of the machine shop, provide direction to machinists, maintain production priorities, enforce established work practices and discipline, and address performance and disciplinary issues in coordination with the Production Manager.

This is not a manufacturing engineering or office-based production management position.You are not responsible for scheduling or administrative work. We are looking for an experienced machinist who wants to take on a leadership role while remaining actively involved in machining and the day-to-day operation of the shop.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the day-to-day activities of the machine shop, providing direction, support, and accountability to machinists and other shop personnel.
  • Set up and operate CNC and manual machine centers, mills, and lathes as production requirements dictate.
  • Enforce established shop-floor standards, work practices, and company policies, and address performance issues promptly and consistently in coordination with the Production Manager.
  • Assist machinists with machine setup, troubleshooting, tooling selection, and machining processes.
  • Maintain awareness of production priorities and workflow to ensure work is progressing efficiently and on time.
  • Work closely with Engineering to develop and machine tight-tolerance tooling and components.
  • Ensure parts and assemblies conform to engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments to perform dimensional verification of work.
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices and maintain a clean, organized shop environment.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate shop personnel to support skill development and performance improvement.
  • Coordinate with Quality personnel to resolve manufacturing and inspection issues.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to machining efficiency, quality, and workflow.
  • Participate in corrective and preventative actions related to manufacturing processes and quality issues.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience setting up and operating CNC and manual machine centers, mills, and lathes in a tight-tolerance manufacturing environment.
  • Previous supervisory or team leadership experience in a manufacturing or machining environment.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Working knowledge of geometric tolerancing and inspection techniques.
  • Proficiency using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, height gages, plug and ring gages, and other inspection tools.
  • Knowledge of conversational programming and G-code.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills related to machining operations and production processes.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing quality standards and documentation practices.
  • Experience collaborating with Engineering and Quality departments in a production environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, medical device, or other high-precision
    manufacturing industries.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 or AS9100 quality systems.
  • Experience in gear manufacturing, including utilizing gear hobbers and shapers.
Requirements
  • All persons hired must be a U.S. Person in accordance with ITAR (22 CFR Part 120-130)
