Job summary

University of California, Berkeley is seeking a Lead Machinist to service and repair emergency generators, pumps, fans and other campus equipment. The role requires operating lathes, milling machines, welding tools, and reading detailed blueprints for precision repairs.

The ideal candidate brings five years of journeyman experience, strong fabrication knowledge, and the ability to coordinate with multiple trades while maintaining safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Must possess five years journeyman experience in a comparable position.
  • Proficient in reading blueprints and schematics.
  • Strong knowledge of metal fabrication principles and equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work in confined spaces.
  • Experience with welding and gas cutting equipment.
  • Excellent communication with campus community.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain campus buildings and research labs.
  • Specify materials and coordinate with other shops in buildings and labs.
  • Read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics for repair work.
  • Troubleshoot and repair pumps, conveyors, engines, generators, and related systems.
  • Maintain safety standards and record-keeping; manage work orders and documentation.
  • Collaborate with EH&S and other trades to complete tasks.
