Job summary
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Staff Machine Protection System Engineer to lead protection-level engineering for SSRL. You will guide modernization, upgrade aging infrastructure to PLC-based interlocks, and ensure rapid fault detection and mitigation to protect beam operations and instrumentation.
Responsibilities include system ownership, commissioning, diagnostics, and documentation, with 24/7 on-call support as part of critical operations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical/computer/systems engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years with PLC-based interlock, control, or safety systems.
- Ability to analyze problems, lead implementations, and communicate clearly.
- Experience integrating modern PLCs with legacy equipment and upgrades.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership for Machine Protection System functions.
- Lead migration from legacy hardware to PLC-based interlock systems.
- Troubleshoot and calibrate legacy vacuum gauge controllers and logic.
- Develop PLC logic using Studio 5000 and maintain AOIs for control devices.
- Create HMI screens, alarms, data logging, and fault-detection tools.
- Lead commissioning, testing, and readiness activities for operations.
- Own system documentation, change control, and configuration records.
- Coordinate with multiple teams to meet evolving operational needs.
