Job summary

City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department seeks a Principal Planner to lead long-range community planning, land use, and code development initiatives. You will develop amendments to the Unified Development Code, research best practices, and present policy recommendations to boards, committees, and Mayor and Council.

The role includes technical leadership, supervising the Long Range Planning Team, site visits for analysis, and coordinating outreach with community stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; 3+ years of relevant experience.
• Master’s degree preferred; AICP certification preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Experience in planning, zoning, and public policy development.
• Strong research, data analysis, and public outreach skills.

Responsibilities

• Develops amendments to the Unified Development Code and related regulations.
• Reviews annexations, rezonings, and zoning modifications.
• Manages special planning projects and prepares communications for public meetings.
• Conducts technical analyses of housing, land use, transportation, and demographics.
• Leads public outreach and incorporates community input into recommendations.
• Supervises Long Range Planning Team and supports professional growth.
