Position Summary:

The Lead Librarian performs high-level professional and technical library workin one or more specific areas such as Adult, Teen, Children’s, Technology orRegional History/Genealogy. This position is responsible for assistingcustomers in accessing the full spectrum of library resources in multipleformats; other responsibilities include responding to complex reference,research/homework and readers’ advisory requests; developing, managing andpromoting the library’s collection of materials; serving as a manager-on-dutyfor the branch or department, and interpreting and enforcing library policiesand guidelines. The position leads the planning and implementation of programsand services for their designated area; serves systemwide teams andparticipates in project management for Library initiatives; provides trainingand professional learning opportunities for library staff, volunteers andcommunity partners. Work is performed with considerable independent judgmentand initiative. Serves and maintains the national reputation of CharlotteMecklenburg Library.

About This Role:

As a key member of the Main Library Adult Services Team, the Lead Librarian –Technology provides leadership and oversight for technology-focused services,programming and customer experiences throughout Main Library, with particularemphasis on the Innovation Lab and other emerging technology spaces andresources. The Lead Librarian supports the development, coordination anddelivery of technology programs and services for customers of varying skilllevels, provides instruction and assistance with specialized technology andequipment, and helps establish procedures and best practices for the effectiveuse of technology resources. The Lead Librarian works collaboratively with MainLibrary staff to identify opportunities to integrate technology into programming,learning and customer service and may facilitate staff training on InnovationLab equipment, digital resources and emerging technologies. This positionrepresents the Library in the community, participates in systemwide teams andworks collaboratively with staff across service areas to support technologyinitiatives and innovative programming. The Lead Librarian serves as theprimary Manager-on-Duty in the absence of the Adult Services Manager;experiencewith cash handling and opening/closing afacilitypreferred.

About Main Library:

Main Library is Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s (CML’s) flagship location and aunique cultural and civic destination situated in the heart of UptownCharlotte. Spanning 115,000 square feet, the new Main Library – scheduled toopen in Spring 2027 – is a transformative project envisioned as afuture-forward anchor for the community and a cornerstone of CML’s systemwidestrategic goals. Main Library will serve as a public common, connectingknowledge, culture and creativity through library programs, specializedservices and partner-delivered content. Co-located with the Theaters at SpiritSquare, this site is designed to be a vibrant, inclusive and multi-use hub withthe goal of strengthening public engagement, supporting economic opportunityand connecting community resources.

Essential Functions:
  • Plan andfacilitate programs and services for a specific area (Adult, Teen, Children’s,Technology or Regional History/Genealogy).
  • Provideprofessional library work for diverse audiences, including frequentface-to-face customer interactions, assistance with collections and access tolibrary materials, resolution of complex reference, research/homework andreaders’ advisory requests.
  • SupportLibrarians, Library Associates and Library Assistants in the planning andexecution of more complex library work.
  • Providesleadership for systemwide projects and initiatives; works collaboratively withstaff in other departments or branches, and with community partners.
  • Serves asmanager-on-duty for the department or branch; ensures issues with facilities,technology and security are reported in a timely and appropriate manner.
MinimumQualifications:

Experience
3 years of progressive experience as a librarian.

Education:
Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution
Licenses andCertifications:
NC Public Library certification required or must be obtained within a specific timeframe.
