Job summary

Amgen is seeking a Laboratory Design Project Engineer to lead planning, design, and delivery of regulated laboratory facilities. You will partner with researchers, engineers, architects, and facilities teams to ensure safe, compliant, functional, and scalable lab spaces throughout project lifecycles.

The role requires travel to project sites and the ability to translate scientific needs into design criteria, lead standards, and coordinate with multiple stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, laboratory science, facilities management, or a related technical discipline.
  • Significant experience in laboratory design, laboratory operations, engineering, architecture, facilities, or capital project delivery.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory planning principles, including space programming, workflow design, equipment integration, and utility requirements.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, fire and life-safety requirements, EHS expectations, and laboratory standards.
  • Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and design documents.
  • Strong project execution, problem-solving, communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to support projects and site stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and influence multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical lead for laboratory planning, design standards, workflows, and facility requirements.
  • Translate needs into design criteria, space programs, equipment requirements, and layouts.
  • Develop and maintain laboratory design standards, guidelines, and details.
  • Review design packages for functionality, safety, and compliance.
  • Ensure designs address ventilation, biosafety, chemical safety, ergonomics, utilities, and waste handling.
  • Collaborate with users to define capacity, adjacencies, and workflow requirements.
  • Lead technical aspects of capital projects from feasibility through occupancy.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, EHS, Facilities, QA, Operations and external teams.
  • Identify equipment integration needs including controls, automation, and infrastructure.
  • Support commissioning and turnover to meet intended use and operations.
  • Monitor industry practices and update organizational standards.
