Job description

Description

SHINE Technologies is seeking a Lead Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer to provide technical leadership for the design, development, procurement, construction, installation, and testing of systems used to control and monitor processes for our new medical isotope production facility. The Lead I&C Engineer directs a collaborative team responsible for the design of the control systems and the selection of instruments and equipment for the SHINE facility, serving as the senior technical authority for the I&C discipline.

Salary

The base salary range for this position is $90,000-$161,500 per year plus a comprehensive benefit package. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities of the Lead I&C Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical leadership, direction, and mentorship to a team of I&C engineers at varying levels of experience; review their work products and foster their professional development.
  • Serve as the primary technical interface between stakeholders (project management, operations, licensing, quality, and vendors) and the I&C team; own the escalation and resolution of I&C technical issues.
  • Establish scope, allocate engineering resources, and set deliverables for I&C design tasks; develop and defend schedule estimates for the length and effort required to create design products.
  • Own decisions on vendor requests, design changes, and updates to equipment and programming; hold vendors accountable to design requirements, cost, and schedule.
  • Serve as the lead responsible engineer for major I&C systems, guiding them through the design, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning process while ensuring they meet design requirements.
  • Direct the development of digital and analog control systems, including distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and data acquisition systems (DAQ); establish review criteria and perform or approve reviews of vendor deliverables.
  • Lead cross-discipline coordination with other engineering groups to select instruments to measure process variables in the process systems in the SHINE facility.
  • Coordinate with the Auxiliary Systems Group on power distribution to I&C equipment, resolving interface issues across disciplines.
  • Prepare, review, and approve instrument specifications, calculations, and test plans supporting the design, new construction, testing, commissioning, in-field troubleshooting, and operation of the future SHINE medical isotope production facility.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of instrument cable routing, conduit and raceway design, installation drawings, and loop diagrams.
  • Establish and maintain I&C design standards, processes, and best practices for the discipline.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and performance feedback for I&C engineering staff.
  • Duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible I&C engineering experience, including 2+ years leading engineering work as a team lead, project lead, or responsible engineer.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and direct the work of other engineers, and to coordinate multi-discipline design efforts.
  • Deep knowledge of I&C systems, hardware, software, theory of operation, environmental qualification (EQ), seismic qualification testing, and plant start-ups.
  • Experience finalizing specifications and design documents for vendor implementation on plant control systems and safety-related systems.
  • Ability to think strategically and take decisive action once the necessary information has been gathered, and to stand behind those decisions.
  • Ability to critically evaluate information and the boldness to ask questions when things don\'t make sense.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical positions to management, regulators, and vendors.

The following are considered a plus:

  • Experience in nuclear analog and digital instrumentation, control, and monitoring.
  • Knowledge of nuclear safety-related systems and quality assurance programs (NQA-1).
  • Experience with digital I&C design and licensing in a regulated nuclear environment (e.g., IEEE standards for safety systems).
  • Understanding of appropriate cable shielding, type, radiation tolerance, and separation by safety train.
  • Experience supporting first-of-a-kind facility design, construction, and commissioning.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 40 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Fine motor coordination and strong depth perception is beneficial.
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
