Job summary

Mercy is seeking a Sterile Processing Instrument Technician Lead to support Decontamination, Processing and Sterilization. You will clean, inspect and assemble instruments for High Level Disinfection or Sterilization while following Manufacturer's Instructions for Use and hospital policies.

The role requires at least 18 months in sterile processing or 1600 hours hands-on, a High School diploma, and CRCST or CSPDT certification with CEU hours.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 18 months experience in Sterile Processing or 1600 hours hands-on experience.
  • Maintain CRCST or CSPDT Certification through HSPA or CBSPD with CEU hours; consider CIS/CER/CHL.
  • Proficiency with PPE and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and operate sterilization equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare decontamination, processing and sterilization of instruments.
  • Maintain documentation in logs or computer systems.
  • Prioritize instrumentation for processing and dispatch equipment.
  • Interact with staff across disciplines.

Job description

The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician Lead, under general supervision follows robust processes in Decontamination, Processing and Sterilization by cleaning instruments and equipment ensuring that all items are free of any bioburden, inspecting, function testing and assembling instruments and equipment for High Level Disinfection or Sterilization. The Sterile Processing Technician always follows the Manufacturer's Instructions for Use in Decontamination, Processing, High Level Disinfection & Sterilization as well as Department and Hospital Processes and Policies. The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician must be able accurately maintain the required documentation on written logs and/or computer systems. Documentation includes processes in Decontamination, Processing, High Level Disinfection or Sterilization as well as Sterile Processing Department Equipment. The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician must be able to prioritize instrumentation for processing, answer telephones and dispatch instrumentation, equipment and supplies. The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician performs their duties in a manner consistent with our Mission, Values, and Mercy Service Standards. Performs other duties as assigned

Position Details:
  • Minimum Qualifications Education: High school graduate or equivalent
  • Experience: Minimum 18 months experience in Sterile Processing or 1600 hours of hands‑on experience in Sterile Processing.
  • Certifications: Maintain CRCST or CSPDT Certification through HSPA or CBSPD by completing required CEU hours. Recommend obtaining additional Sterile Processing Certifications of CIS, CER &/or CHL.
  • Other: PROF062- Preceptor Workshop & PROF358- Preceptor Workshop Pre-course Curriculum completion within 6 months of hire.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Must interact with staff and co-workers across a diverse range of disciplines.
  • Must be able to follow directions.
  • Must be able to operate equipment.

The physical demands described here are the representative of the minimums that must be met by an employee to perform all essential functions of the job. Most physical demands are below:

  • Frequent: high/mid/low level lift of items weighing around 25 pounds

Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 195 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who was determined to help women and children in Dublin experiencing poverty.
