Job summary

The University of Chicago is seeking an instructional course specialist to provide classroom support for undergraduate and masters courses in the Computer Science department. This renewable one-year appointment reports to the Director of Undergraduate Studies and Associate Director of Operations.

The role includes leading TAs and graders, coordinating instructional teams, setting up lab equipment, and managing platforms like GitHub, Gradescope, Canvas, and Ed Discussion.

Qualifications

  • 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees teaching assistants and graders, ensuring grading is accurate, consistent, fair, and completed on schedule.
  • Provide training and guidance on grading standards, course policies, and instructional procedures.
  • Conduct regular in-person meetings with assigned TAs and graders to address questions and ensure consistency.
  • Coordinate the instructional team and maintain uninterrupted course operations.
  • Set up lab equipment and learn safe handling for instructional sessions.
  • Manage course technology platforms (GitHub, Gradescope, Canvas, Ed Discussion).
  • Coordinate communication among faculty, staff, TAs, graders, and students regarding course activities and policies.
  • Prepare instructional materials, manuals, syllabi, and documentation.
  • Lead discussion sections and labs, providing last-minute instructional coverage when needed.
  • Attend lectures to support instruction and coordination.
  • Answer student questions through Ed Discussion and other platforms.
  • Grade homework, labs, quizzes, and exams.
  • Assist faculty with assignments, demonstrations, and other instructional materials.
  • Support students in developing experimental techniques and interpreting data.
  • Coordinate accommodations and testing logistics with SDS and other offices.
