Action Facilities Management, INC (AFM) is seeking a Lead HVAC Mechanic in Austin, TX. You will install, repair, and maintain a wide range of HVAC equipment, including controls and refrigeration systems, at a journeyman level.

The role requires team leadership, blueprints literacy, and strong safety adherence. Experience in commercial/industrial settings and EPA Universal certification are required; additional certifications such as NATE HVAC Excellence or Journeyman license are a plus.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4 years of progressive HVAC experience in commercial/industrial settings.
  • Ability to lead a team of technicians and coordinate field work.
  • EPA Universal certification and ability to obtain additional relevant certs.
  • Strong reading of blueprints and mechanical schematics.
  • Proficient communication in English and safe work practices.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain HVAC systems and controls at journeyman level.
  • Perform diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs on complex equipment.
  • Fabricate and install ductwork; connect refrigerant circuits and controls.
  • Lead a team on projects, coordinate with tenants and stakeholders.
  • Maintain safety and PPE standards; read blueprints and schematics.

Job DescriptionThe Lead HVAC Mechanic will be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all types of HVAC equipment at a journeyman level of service including air-conditioning equipment, refrigeration equipment, HVAC control systems, and more.Pay Rate: $50.47 per hour total compensation. This is a union positionShift: 7:00am - 4:00pmEssential Job Functions:Performs the maintenance, diagnostic testing, overhauling, installation, and effects repairs on a large variety of types of refrigeration, dehumidification, air-conditioning, ventilation and heating systems equipment and controls within critically controlled environmental installations.Research specifications as provided by other parties and makes installation corrections required ensuring proper function of equipment as required by tenant agency requirements.Performs preventative maintenance functions which include, but are not limited to: changing filters; cleaning cooling towers, cleaning heating and cooling coils, etc.Performs a wide variety of building maintenance tasks, which must be performed to proficiency including, but not limited to adjustments and repairs to HVAC and Electrical systems.Functions independently and/or in teams. Relied upon to make decisions and sound recommendations concerning HVAC operations and maintenance.Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and chassis parts using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment.Installs evaporator units in chassis or in air-duct system, using hand tools.Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment.Joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions, and solders joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant.Installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit.Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source.Installs air and water filters in completed installation.Injects refrigerant into compressor to test systems and adds Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure.Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation.Tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges, electronic leak detector, and electronic micron gauge or soap-and-water solution.Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or wire bands.Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units using electrician's hand tools and test equipment.Minor plumbing duties such as repairing and patching pipes; fixing leaks; unclogging sinks, drains, and toilets; and replacing plumbing fixtures.Other duties as assignedRequired Skills, Experience, and Education:Minimum of 4 years of experience (within the past 7 years) of progressive, hands-on experience in commercial or industrial settings in a large, complex environment.Experience leading a team of skilled tradesmen or techniciansHigh School diploma or equivalentEPA Universal certificationPossess or ability to obtain an additional certification such as a NATE HVAC Excellence; UA Start HVAC Certification; or union Journeyman licenseAbility to read, write, and speak EnglishAbility to communicate with a variety of coworkers and government stakeholdersKnowledge of computers and basic computer applicationsAbility to read and understand blueprints and schematicsAbility to effectively complete tasks in a team setting or independentlyPhysical Requirements:Must have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 poundsAbility to perform heavy manual labor and work from heightsMust be able to work on roofs of buildingsMust be physically capable of traveling.Must have ability to maintain assigned work hoursMust have sufficient endurance to perform tasks over a long period of timeMust have ability to climb ladders of varying heightsWorking Environment:The environment will be both inside and outside various facilitiesThis job may require work on the roof of a building or in the basement and confined spacesMay experience high noise levels in connection with equipment and construction toolsMust be able to perform work while wearing all required PPE.Must be willing to accept requirements and participate in training for Confined Space to include all aspects of breathing apparatus Fit Testing.Once certified to do so, must be willing to work in confined spacesAction Facilities Management, INC (AFM) is a Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSM) and a Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) established in 2001 that provides services to government and commercial clients in 11 states and the District of Columbia.
