Job summary

Action Facilities Management in Austin, TX is seeking an HVAC Mechanic responsible for installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems including air-conditioning, refrigeration, and control systems at journeyman level.

Pay rate is $33.43 total hourly compensation with a range of $28.50–$33.43 per hour. Shift is graveyard, Tue-Sat, 10:00pm–6:30am. Must have EPA Universal or obtain within 3 months and 3+ years HVAC experience.

Qualifications

  • EPA Universal certification required or within 3 months of hire.
  • At least 3 years HVAC hands-on experience in commercial or industrial settings.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics; basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, diagnose, overhaul, and repair a wide range of HVAC equipment.
  • Install evaporator units and fabricate ductwork.
  • Test and adjust systems for optimal performance.
  • Work independently or in teams and advise on HVAC operations.
  • Follow safety and PPE guidelines; handle refrigerants and valves.
  • Replace defective electrical components as needed.

Position Summary:

The HVAC Mechanic will be responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all types of HVAC equipment at a Journeyman level of service including air-conditioning equipment, refrigeration equipment, HVAC control systems, and more.

Pay Rate: $33.43 total hourly compensation

Shift: Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00pm - 6:30am (overnight)

Essential Job Functions:
  • Performs the maintenance, diagnostic testing, overhauling, installation, and effects repairs on a large variety of types of refrigeration, dehumidification, air-conditioning, ventilation and heating systems equipment and controls within critically controlled environmental installations.
  • Research specifications as provided by other parties and makes installation corrections required ensuring proper function of equipment as required by tenant agency requirements.
  • Performs preventative maintenance functions which include, but are not limited to: changing filters; cleaning cooling towers, cleaning heating and cooling coils, etc.
  • Performs a wide variety of building maintenance tasks, which must be performed to proficiency including, but not limited to adjustments and repairs to HVAC and Electrical systems.
  • Functions independently and/or in teams. Relied upon to make decisions and sound recommendations concerning HVAC operations and maintenance.
  • Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and chassis parts using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment.
  • Installs evaporator units in chassis or in air-duct system, using hand tools.
  • Cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment.
  • Joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions, and solders joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant.
  • Installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit.
  • Connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source.
  • Installs air and water filters in completed installation.
  • Injects refrigerant into compressor to test systems and adds Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure.
  • Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation.
  • Tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges, electronic leak detector, and electronic micron gauge or soap-and-water solution.
  • Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or wire bands.
  • Replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units using electrician's hand tools and test equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QualificationsRequired Skills, Experience, and Education:
  • EPA Universal (or ability to obtain EPA Universal within 3 months of hire)
  • Minimum of 3 years (within the past 5 years) of progressive, hands-on HVAC experience in commercial or industrial settings in a large, complex environment
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to effectively read, write, and speak English
  • Knowledge of computers and basic computer applications
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of personnel and stakeholders
Working Environment:

Work takes place in a commercial sized facility with indoor and outdoor exposure. May be exposed to loud noises due to machinery or equipment. Must be able to work in confined spaces with proper training an PPE

Must be able to work safely from a ladder or scaffolding.
