Primary Purpose of Position | HVAC Controls Technician troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, maintains and operates the DDC BAS (Direct Digital Control Building Automation System), pneumatic and electro-pneumatic systems, central HVAC equipment including pumps, chillers, condensers, air handling units and miscellaneous control elements. Additionally, the Lead Technician will distribute and supervise the work of 2-3 fellow Technicians in their group. Under the direction of the HVAC Supervisor, the Lead will facilitate the daily taskload for their team, assign work orders, review and sign off on purchase orders, etc. Systems supported include DX units, environmental chambers, walk-in coolers and freezers, air dryers, ice machines, packaged units, CRAC units, dehumidification systems, refrigerated scientific equipment, ultra-low and cryogenic equipment, small chillers, and hot water and steam boiler systems. Duties | Knowledge of air conditioning, refrigeration, steam, chilled water, lubricants, natural gas and propane fueled equipment, compressed air and air drying equipment, single and three phase electrical power, air handling and distribution, fluid flow, heat transfer, sound and vibration, thermal comfort, indoor environmental health, air contaminants and odors, energy use, and duct and pipe design and sizing is required. Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical diagrams. Must possess computer skills to operate the Computerized Maintenance Management System. Must possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to operate as an HVAC Controls/first responder technician in developing, coordinating and executing various HVAC maintenance strategies for new and existing buildings as well as construction strategies in renovation projects. Ability to use air and water balance devices, design and repair pneumatic, electronic, and electromechanical controlled devices, sensors, flow and pressure regulators; and understand front end graphical user interfaces and how controls are implemented in buildings. Ability to operate building control devices within the design sequence of the systems for proper utilization and energy efficient operation and at times recommend software improvements to others. Must understand the theory and have good working knowledge of pneumatic systems, direct digital control systems, electrical control systems, hydronic systems, air side systems, refrigeration and steam systems as well as load calculations, air distribution, indoor air quality, and energy. Knowledge of safety needs and air exchange rates of lab systems and vivariums are also required. Strong communication skills for diverse customer populations are also required. Ability to read and comprehend both mechanical and electrical blueprints as well as control drawings. Valid North Carolina Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to hire.
