Mt. Carmel Stabilization Group, Inc. is seeking a Lead Heavy Equipment Union Mechanic to supervise and perform hands-on repairs in our shop.

You will diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide range of heavy equipment, lead a small team, and ensure repairs are completed safely and on schedule. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience, strong diagnostic skills, and a track record of mentoring other mechanics.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment.
• Ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics.
• Valid driver’s license.
• CDL or manufacturer certifications are a plus.
• MUST HAVE HAND TOOLS AND BOX.

Job description

Mt. Carmel Stabilization Group is a leader in soil stabilization and ground improvement services, specializing in lime, cement, and other soil treatment solutions that create strong, reliable foundations for construction and infrastructure projects. Our Columbus maintenance shop is a critical hub supporting field operations across Ohio and Northern Kentucky, ensuring equipment is maintained and ready for deployment.

We are seeking an experienced Lead Heavy Equipment Union Mechanic to oversee day-to-day mechanical repairs and maintenance in our heavy equipment shop. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who can diagnose and repair a wide range of construction equipment and specialized heavy equipment while helping organize shop workflow and supporting other mechanics.

The ideal candidate is dependable, mechanically skilled, safety-minded, and comfortable working independently in a fast-paced small-shop environment. The Lead Mechanic will serve as a technical resource for the team and help ensure equipment is repaired correctly, efficiently, and returned to service on schedule.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair heavy construction and diesel engines.
• Perform mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine diagnostics and repairs.
• Service and maintain equipment including Stabilizers, excavators, skid steers, loaders, dozers, compactors, water trucks, and other specialized heavy equipment.
• Read and interpret service manuals, hydraulic schematics, wiring diagrams, and diagnostic information.
• Inspect equipment to identify mechanical problems, safety issues, and preventative maintenance needs.
• Lead and assist other mechanics with difficult diagnostics and repairs.
• Prioritize and assign shop work based on equipment needs, deadlines, and available resources.
• Review completed repairs to ensure work is performed properly and equipment is safe to operate.
• Communicate repair findings, required parts, and estimated labor needs to management.
• Help identify parts and materials needed for repairs and coordinate with parts suppliers as needed.
• Maintain accurate service records and document repairs and parts used.
• Perform preventative maintenance and inspections.
• Assist with field repairs and service calls when necessary.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
• Follow OSHA, company, and equipment manufacturer safety procedures.
• Train and mentor less-experienced mechanics and apprentices.
• Help management identify recurring equipment problems and recommend cost-effective repair solutions.
• Perform other mechanical and shop-related duties as needed.

Working Conditions

• Primarily shop-based with occasional field service work.
• Exposure to dirt, grease, oils, hydraulic fluids, diesel fuel, noise, and outdoor weather conditions.
• Frequent standing, bending, climbing, lifting, and working in confined or awkward positions.
• Use of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, lifting equipment, and shop machinery.
• Appropriate personal protective equipment is required.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment preferred.
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrain components.
• Ability to read and understand hydraulic and electrical schematics.
• Ability to use diagnostic tools and manufacturer service information.
• Strong understanding of preventative maintenance and equipment inspections.
• Previous experience leading, mentoring, or coordinating other mechanics preferred.
• Ability to work independently and make sound repair decisions.
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
• Ability to lift, carry, and work with heavy parts and components.
• Welding and fabrication experience.
• CDL, manufacturer's certifications, MVAC, or other relevant certifications are a plus.

Leadership Expectations

The Lead Mechanic is expected to set the standard for quality, productivity, safety, and professionalism in the shop. This position should be willing to get their hands dirty, assist other mechanics when needed, and take ownership of difficult repairs rather than simply directing others.

The Lead Mechanic will work closely with equipment management to keep jobs moving, communicate problems early, and help ensure customers' equipment is repaired properly and on time.
