Job summary

The State of Maryland is hiring a Hearing Officer III Lead/Advanced in the FAMLI Appeals Division. This remote, full-time role conducts administrative hearings, writes decisions, and ensures due process under the FAMLI program.

Lead level includes training and supervising other officers; advanced level handles more complex cases. Minimum qualifications: Juris Doctor degree and four years of legal experience in civil, criminal, or administrative proceedings; must become a member of the Maryland

Qualifications

• A Juris Doctor degree is required from an accredited law school.
• Four years of legal experience involving civil, criminal, or administrative proceedings.

Responsibilities

• Conduct impartial administrative hearings related to FAMLI program eligibility, benefits, and contribution liability.
• Review case materials, relevant statutes, and evidence prior to hearings and ensure due process.
• Prepare timely, legally sound proposed decisions and issue written orders.
• Assist with appeals pre-review and intake; conduct research in preparation for hearings.
• Instruct parties of their rights and conduct pre-hearing conferences to limit issues.
