Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, located in Menlo Park, CA, invites applications for a Staff Scientist to lead the development of the HAXPES/PEEM beamline and guide scientific program development and user support within SSRL.

You will oversee beamline design, coordinate with engineers, develop independent research, and mentor collaborations across national laboratories, industry, and academia.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in physics, applied physics, materials science, or related field, with ≥4 years post-PhD experience.
• Proven research excellence in materials science with publications and experiments.
• Extensive hands-on experience with HAXPES and/or PEEM techniques.
• Experience developing, operating, and maintaining complex synchrotron beamline systems.
• Experience with facility operations and user support.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership for design, construction, and commissioning of the HAXPES/PEEM beamline and endstation.
• Translate scientific requirements into technical specs for beamline optics, monochromators, and detectors.
• Collaborate with project manager, engineers, and scientists to develop high-performance instrumentation.
• Oversee integration, testing, commissioning, and performance optimization.
• Develop and lead an independent research program using HAXPES/PEEM aligned with SSRL goals.
• Conduct frontier research in microelectronics, semiconductors, thin films, heterostructures, buried interfaces.
• Lead and participate in collaborative projects with SSRL staff, users, industry partners, and other labs.
• Publish results and present at conferences.
• Help establish and grow the HAXPES/PEEM user program; engage with the user community.
• Support users throughout experimental lifecycle including design, beamtime, data analysis.
• Develop and maintain user training and outreach activities.
• Manage routine beamline operations, maintenance, and performance improvement.
• Ensure safe operation per DOE/SLAC requirements.
• Contribute to division initiatives, mentoring, outreach, and planning.
