Job summary

Rocky Talkie seeks an entrepreneurial, highly creative engineering leader to guide design, development, and manufacturing of products. The role leads architecture decisions, drives process improvements, recruits talent, and partners with manufacturers to scale from concept to mass production.

The position is in person, SF-based, four days a week, with growth opportunities in a fast-scaling startup in the outdoor electronics space.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in outdoor/wearable consumer electronics development, preferably high volume (>100k/yr).
• 3+ years of engineering management experience.
• BS/MS/PhD in mechanical or electrical engineering, or equivalent.
• Experience with Asian manufacturing and ODM/JDM/CM relationships.
• Experience with RF devices (VHF, UHF, BT).
• Experience developing products subject to RF, EMC, safety, environmental, and international regulatory requirements.
• Experience with rugged waterproof devices (IP67 or greater).
• Self-motivated, organized, process-oriented.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate engineering across Mechanical, Electrical, Firmware, and Manufacturing for new product development.
• Function as a systems architect for new products, leveraging multi-domain expertise.
• Work with operations on sustaining efforts for existing products shipped in high volume.
• Lead products through architecture, prototyping, EVT/DVT/PVT, certification, NPI, ramp, and sustaining engineering.
• Ensure development processes meet product and cost requirements.
• Partner with domestic and international suppliers and manufacturing partners (ODM/JDM/CM).
• Coordinate with overseas employees and manufacturing partners.
• Create engineering design, validation, and reliability criteria with product team.
• Mentor engineers in best practices, prioritization, and documentation.
• Recruit and manage full-time and contract engineering talent.
• Cross-functionally work with other department heads to meet company goals.
• Foster a people-first environment.
