Basic Function

Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, Development, and Transportation, train, assign, review and coordinate the work of District grounds personnel; perform a variety of skilled grounds maintenance duties on school grounds, tracks, athletic fields, and playing grounds in order to maintain grounds at all school sites and District facilities in a clean, neat and attractive condition.

Distinguishing Characteristics

In addition to performing skilled grounds maintenance duties, the Lead Grounds Maintenance Worker provides training and work direction to assigned grounds maintenance personnel, student workers, crews assigned to special projects and others as assigned. Grounds Maintenance Worker incumbents perform semi-skilled to skilled grounds maintenance duties and operate a variety of heavy grounds equipment including large gang mowers, tractor, skip loader and ditch witch. Grounds Maintenance Worker I incumbents perform unskilled to semi-skilled grounds maintenance duties and operate light equipment including push and riding mowers, weeder, blower and edger.

Plan and develop mowing and grounds maintenance projects according to available personnel, prevailing weather conditions, school and District activities and other applicable factors.

Train and provide work direction to assigned personnel; assign, review and coordinate grounds maintenance work; review requests for groundskeeping and gardening at schools and District facilities and recommend best procedures or methods for completing jobs; request needed equipment, tools, supplies and materials.

Oversee and perform skilled gardening work including planting, cultivating, pruning, fertilizing and irrigating flowers, trees, shrubs hedges and lawns; oversee and participate in grounds maintenance projects including installing and repairing fences and gates, removing trash and debris, and maintaining parking lots, athletic fields and playgrounds.

Operate and ensure proper care and maintenance of heavy grounds maintenance equipment including a tractor, cherry picker, sprayer, dump truck, hedge trimmer, weed eaters, chain saws, cement cutter, sweeper, blower, mowers, welding torch, forklift, chipper and tamper; arrange for repair and maintenance of equipment according to established policies and procedures.

Maintain records and prepare reports of work completed, materials used and items purchased; contact vendors and suppliers for parts and items not kept in stock.

Communicate with school and District administrators and managers regarding grounds maintenance needs and projects; confer with supervisor regarding workload priorities.

Perform varied grounds maintenance duties such as repairing potholes and sprinklers, striping parking lots and athletic fields, inspecting grounds for insect infestation and plant diseases, and spraying grounds as needed.

Assist in moving furniture and equipment for classroom set-ups and special events.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Education

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school.

Experience

Any combination equivalent to: three years of grounds maintenance experience including the operation of power equipment, care of lawns and landscaped areas, and the application of herbicides and pesticides.

Licenses and Certifications

Must possess a valid California Driver's license and maintain insurability by the District's insurance carrier for liability purposes.

Pesticide applicator's certification

WORKING CONDITIONS

Outdoor work environment; subject to seasonal heat and cold and adverse weather conditions; noise from equipment operation; and regular exposure to exhaust fumes, dust, odors, fertilizer, herbicide and pesticide.
