Job summary

King County's Solid Waste Division seeks a Lead Geologist for the Landfill Engineering Geology and Environmental Data (LEGEND) unit to direct groundwater assessment, monitoring, and improvement at Solid Waste facilities. The role combines senior project management with geotechnical duties at Cedar Hills Landfill and closed landfills.

The position leads diverse teams, oversees consultants, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, including post-closure reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in earth science or closely related field; Licensed Geologist.
• 5 years of experience analyzing landfill engineering elements, including environmental controls and monitoring systems, in leadership roles.
• 4 years experience preparing hydrogeologic evaluations under licensed geologist supervision.
• Ability to lead engineering/scientific support staff on complex projects.
• Experience with project management methodologies.
• Strong written and oral communications with diverse stakeholders.
• Proficient with MS Project, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

• Manage environmental investigation and feasibility studies for environmental control system improvements and post-closure of closed landfills.
• Provide routine geotechnical services to plan, design, construct, and maintain landfill environmental control systems including groundwater and landfill gas monitoring.
• Write technical reports and issue papers for technical and non-technical audiences to meet regulatory requirements.
• Present and discuss technical information with managers, staff, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.
• Provide technical and quality review for compliance reports.
• Mentor and guide team members and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Ensure consistency of well boring logs and development plans with industry standards and regulations.
• Provide leadership and assign tasks to project teams to meet outcomes.
• Negotiate regulatory permit conditions for groundwater, surface water, and operating permits.
• Manage Cedar Hills Hydrogeologic Report Update and related capital projects.
