Job summary

Stepp’s Towing & Heavy Transport in Tampa Bay area is seeking a Lead Fleet Diesel Mechanic to maintain and repair heavy trucks and equipment with strong diagnostics and leadership skills. You will mentor junior mechanics and help manage workflow to ensure safe, reliable operations.

The role requires owning your tools, CDL preferred, and a clean driving record. Expect a Monday–Friday schedule with after-hours emergencies, competitive hourly pay, and growth opportunities within a family-owned

Qualifications

• Prior experience as a Fleet Diesel Mechanic is required.
• Diagnostics experience is a must.
• Must have your own tools.
• Clean driving record for the past 3 years.
• Must pass a background check and drug test.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on diesel vehicles (heavy trucks and equipment).
• Troubleshoot and resolve engine, transmission, clutch, suspension, steering issues, and more.
• Oversee and mentor team members; assist with scheduling and workflow management.
• Conduct routine preventive maintenance tasks such as oil changes.
• Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operation.
• Test drive vehicles and operate manual transmissions.
• Accurately document issues found and repair steps taken.
• Ensure all work meets safety and company standards.

Position Overview

As a Lead Fleet Diesel Mechanic with Stepp’s Towing & Heavy Transport, you’ll play a vital role in keeping Tampa’s roads moving safely and reliably. Your expertise in diagnostics and heavy equipment maintenance will ensure our trucks and equipment are always ready for the job. In this lead role, you will also have opportunities to mentor fellow mechanics, provide technical guidance, and support workflow management. If you’re an experienced diesel mechanic with strong diagnostic skills, leadership abilities, and a commitment to quality work, we’d like to hear from you.

Essential Functions

• Perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on diesel vehicles (including heavy trucks and other equipment)
• Troubleshoot and resolve malfunctions related to engines, transmissions, clutches, suspension, steering, and more
• Oversee and mentor other team members, provide technical guidance, and assist with scheduling and workflow management
• Conduct routine preventive maintenance tasks, such as oil changes
• Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operation
• Test drive vehicles (must be able to operate manual transmissions)
• Accurately document issues found and repair steps taken
• Ensure all work meets safety and company standards

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Prior experience as a Fleet Diesel Mechanic is required
• Diagnostics experience is a must
• Must have your own tools
• Valid driver’s license required (CDL preferred)
• Ability to drive manual transmission vehicles is required
• Clean driving record for the past 3 years
• Must pass a background check and drug test
• Strong communication skills

Pay

• $35 to $40 per hour

Schedule

• Monday to Friday, 7:00 am – 5:00 pm (After-hours emergency calls as needed)
