Qualifications

• Must attend required continuing professional education annually to keep abreast of changes in statutes and accounting theories and principles.
• Thorough knowledge of governmental auditing standards.
• Ability to interpret, analyze and record data and fiscal information.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to modify and/or design the audit plan procedures as a result of the review of the control structure at the audit site.
• Ability to study and evaluate financial and managerial control structures for both manual and computer systems.
• Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
• A degree is not required; 5+ years of accounting experience in a similar role may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Design and perform audit procedures to examine assigned government units.
• Serve as lead auditor on audit teams and coordinate work of team members.
• Prepare reports detailing audit findings on financial position and compliance.
• Audit federal funds received by governmental units.
• Research statutes and standards in preparation of audits; consult with participating organizations to determine recording adequacy.
• Ensure proper accounting policies are followed by elected and appointed public officials.
• May lead special projects such as election recounts as needed.
• Advise officials on statutory requirements and accounting practices; communicate results to stakeholders.
• Provide on-the-job instruction and supervisory support to agency staff.
