Job summary

H+M Industrial EPC is seeking a Senior Estimator to lead our estimating group within the Houston area. The role involves coordinating with project management, procurement, and construction to develop accurate estimates for EPC projects from bid walk to submission.

The candidate will own the estimating process, produce detailed cost breakdowns, and support bid forms and schedules. Strong Excel, MS Project, and Primavera experience are essential.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of estimating or construction experience (EPC preferred) in industrial construction.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Engineering Technology preferred.
  • Some knowledge of instrumentation and electrical estimation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and capable of establishing respect and credibility.
  • Strong data analysis skills with emphasis in MS Excel.
  • Microsoft Project and Primavera P6 experience preferred.
  • TWIC and HASC Basic Plus required.

  • Lead Estimating Team and coordinate with Project Managers and Construction dept.

  • Lead multiple projects, train Jr. Estimators, and manage risk.
  • Develop and review detailed bid packages and schedules with Project Controls.
  • Present final estimates to Project Management and Executive team.

Job description

Work Schedule: Standard schedule is Monday through Friday.

Purpose: Lead the Construction & EPC estimating process with project management and the construction project teams during the proposal process and throughout the project lifecycle. Responsible for planning, coordination, and execution of company’s estimating standards.

Core Job Responsibilities
  • Lead, Manage, and Hold Estimating Team Accountable. Facilitate effective communication and efficient resource deployment within the estimating group as well as with the Project Managers and Construction dept. Senior Estimator has delegation authority to Jr. Level estimating personnel.
  • Take clear ownership of estimate development from initial bid walk through proposal submittal. Complete any required client bid forms or cost breakdowns.
  • Assure that all company and project goals are properly understood and acted upon by all estimating personnel.
  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and attend pre-bid meetings as needed. Lead the construction & EPC estimating effort and maintain a standard estimating process.
  • Support the project management group in developing the estimates, proposals, bid forms, and other required proposal deliverables. Identify potential gaps in client provided information and H+M Engineering provided quantities. Develop quantity surveys from plans and specifications, as well as conceptual information (i.e. P&IDs).
  • Coordinate the development of material take-offs (MTOs) from client supplied drawings and specifications which can be used for obtaining purchase-ready quotes, in conjunction with the Purchasing Department, including training of Jr. Level estimating personnel.
  • Lead the development and review of detailed subcontractor scope of work (SOW) from supplied bid documents with division of responsibility and detailed scope of supply between Client, H+M, and Subcontractor. Coordinate between Client and Subcontractor for field visits and any other clarifications required through the bid phase.
  • Ability to clearly communicate Scope of Work and proper bid assumptions and qualifications to I&E subcontractors.
  • Assign labor values to the work that H+M will self-perform. Exhibit strong knowledge of civil, structural, mechanical equipment, and piping installation.
  • In a coordinated effort with the quality management group, review supplied quality documentation and Inspections & Test Plans (ITPs) and ensure potential cost impacts are captured in the estimate and properly communicated to the Project Team.
  • Review and incorporate historical data from previous bid projects, completed projects, purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, etc. into estimating process.
  • Understand field conditions under which the work will be performed and identify potential cost and schedule impacts. Provide constructability and execution expertise during the bid phase of the project.
  • Determine applicable rental equipment required for field installation, including proper crane sizing.
  • Consider feedback from Construction Management and incorporate cost impacts into future estimates.
  • Lead multiple projects simultaneously, through coordination with Bid Team and delegation and training of Jr. Level estimating personnel.
  • Identify risk factors at the bid stage and ensure risks are properly mitigated and communicated to the Project Management group.
  • Generate Level II schedule activities for engineering, procurement, and construction activities for submission with proposal. Lead the coordination effort with Project Controls to develop P6 schedule.
  • Lead estimate review meetings with the Project Team. Present final estimate and supporting bid package documentation for review to Project Management, Estimating Manager, Construction Management, and Executive Management.
  • Attend internal kick-off meetings with project management, engineering, and/or construction groups, ensuring proper handover of estimate information upon award of a project.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor as needed.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
