Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks an experienced Assistant Shop Foreman and lead county mechanic to diagnose and repair mechanical problems on motorized and specialty construction equipment in a county shop.

You will supervise mechanics, manage the parts inventory, coordinate preventive maintenance, and ensure safety and compliance with OSHA and DHEC standards while coordinating with the Shop Foreman and county procurement.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of work experience directly related to the area of employment.
• Completion of one academic year of a SC High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six months of related experience.
• Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair mechanical problems in motorized and specialty equipment.
• Assist Shop Foreman as lead county mechanic and supervise mechanics.
• Manage parts inventory, shop documentation, and inventory control to ensure accuracy and cost efficiency.
• Perform welding/fabrication and assist in safety inspections; ensure OSHA/DHEC compliance.
