Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is hiring a skilled equipment mechanic to diagnose and repair a range of motorized and diesel-powered equipment. You will service engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, and hydraulic components while performing welding and fabrications as needed.

Experience with on-board computer diagnostics and testing is required, along with strong attention to safety and compliance with OSHA and DHEC rules.

Qualifications

• 1.5 years of related work experience; or completion of 1 academic year of SC Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum per substitution.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required; CDL Class A within 6 months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair mechanical problems in motorized and specialty construction equipment.
• Repair or replace parts to maintain gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust, cylinder heads, and cooling systems.
• Perform welding fabrication and modify equipment to improve production.
• Use computerized test equipment to diagnose and repair on-board computer systems.
• Perform service calls, after-hours emergency shop support, and inclement weather response.
• Maintain safe, OSHA- and DHEC-compliant shop practices.
