Job summary

AppFolio is seeking an Integrations & AI Architect to solve complex problems across systems that run the business. This hands-on engineering leadership role spans discovery through design, implementation and production, involving APIs, data flows, automation, and AI capabilities.

You will guide architecture choices, prototype approaches, and build reusable components while working with enterprise applications, data, and security teams to scale solutions across the organization.

Qualifications

• 10+ years across software engineering, integration engineering, platform engineering, or related disciplines.
• Strong track record delivering complex production systems across multiple apps, platforms, or domains.
• Strong systems thinking with ability to reason through interactions, dependencies, failure modes, data flows, and long-term architectural implications.
• Hands-on depth across APIs, integrations, events, data flows, distributed systems, and enterprise SaaS apps.
• Software engineering or scripting experience with prototyping, debugging, inspecting code, and contributing to implementations.
• Strong understanding of synchronous/asynchronous APIs, event-driven architecture, messaging, orchestration, and batch processing.
• Experience with MuleSoft, Workato, AWS or similar platforms; ability to choose approach by problem, not tool.
• Strong understanding of API design, authentication/authorization, testing, CI/CD, observability, resiliency, security, and production ops.
• Experience mentoring engineers, leading design discussions, and influencing decisions across teams.
• Strong communication across technical discussions and business outcomes.
• Ability to take ambiguous problems and drive them to implementation.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and implementation for complex cross-system solutions spanning enterprise apps, APIs, integrations, automation, cloud services, data, and AI.
• Translate ambiguous problems into pragmatic system designs with boundaries, sources of truth, APIs, events, schemas, and data flows.
• Evaluate tradeoffs for scalability, reliability, security, complexity, and maintainability; balance long-term architecture with near-term delivery.
• Build prototypes/POCs to validate approaches and reduce risk for larger investments.
• Work with APIs, code, schemas, events, logs, and system behavior to validate designs and guide implementation.
• Establish engineering patterns across APIs, event-driven architecture, orchestration, automation, data movement.
• Set technical direction across integration ecosystems (MuleSoft, Workato, AWS) selecting approaches by problem rather than tool.
• Improve reliability and production readiness with patterns for observability, error handling, retries, reconciliation, testing, CI/CD, security.
• Turn delivered solutions into reusable components and shared capabilities to reduce one-off integrations.
• Partner with Data and Engineering on system-of-record decisions connecting apps with data, automation, and AI-enabled workflows.
• Lead architecture reviews and technical design discussions; mentor engineers on complex decisions.
• Strengthen practices around reliability, maintainability, security, testing, observability, and production operations.
