Join to apply for the Lead Engineering Technician role at Apex Engineering Group, Inc.

Office Location: Any Apex Office (Fargo, Bismarck, or Dickinson, ND or Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, or Minnetonka, MN)

Apex Engineering Group has openings for Lead Engineering Technicians. These positions are flexible in location and can be performed from any of our Apex offices or in a hybrid setup. Primary responsibilities include working as a key project team member on highway and urban roadway projects from design through construction. A Lead Engineering Technician should be capable of independently and collaboratively contributing to project plans using CADD skills and may serve as Chief Inspector on construction projects. Reporting typically goes to a Project Manager or senior team member. Additional duties may involve materials testing and inspection with concrete and asphalt during construction, supporting survey crews, and training junior staff.

Qualification Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Highly desirable: A 2-Year Associate Degree in Engineering Technology or a Technical Degree in Drafting (applicable experience may be accepted).
• Preferred: 5 to 10 years of experience with civil engineering design and construction inspection principles.
• Proficiency with CADD platforms such as Bentley OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation Connect, Autodesk AutoCAD, and Civil 3D, especially for remote work.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows/Office products.
• Experience with material testing and current MnDOT certifications preferred; ability to attain certifications if not already certified.
• Knowledge of MnDOT’s AASHTOWARE system for entering daily work reports.
• Strong communication, organizational skills, and ability to work in team environments.
• Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Physical Requirements

• Operate a computer under ergonomic conditions.
• Work in various weather conditions and terrains at construction sites.
• Prolonged standing, walking, and lifting objects up to 50 pounds.
• Work scheduled hours, including possible overtime during construction season.

Typical Tasks and Duties

• Prepare detailed drawings and design layouts using CADD software.
• Calculate dimensions, material quantities, and other project parameters.
• Follow company and client CADD standards.
• Assist in development of construction observation, inspection, surveying, and testing skills.
• Act as resident project or owner’s representative during construction.
• Communicate effectively with contractors and project teams.
• Document construction progress and input data into records systems.
• Participate in meetings and maintain safety and ethical standards.
• Travel and work overtime as needed, including overnight stays.
