Job summary

Duke Energy Corporation is seeking a Lead Engineer in Raleigh, NC, to solve complex problems and lead transmission projects with minimal supervision. You will guide project engineers, apply advanced technical expertise, and drive cross-functional collaboration across teams. A PE license is required, with a BS in engineering (ABET) and 8+ years of experience.

A master’s degree may substitute for the BS. Hybrid mobility is offered, with opportunities to mentor staff, review designs, and ensure

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer’s License is required prior to hire.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering may be considered in lieu of the B.S. degree.

Responsibilities

  • Guide, mentor, and review deliverables from project engineers throughout transmission project lifecycles.
  • Provide engineering expertise to analyze and resolve complex problems with long-term system-wide impacts.
  • Plan, organize, estimate, schedule and monitor work with limited standardization; navigate non-standard situations.
  • Manage and coordinate complex projects with full technical responsibility and knowledge sharing.
  • Demonstrate broad knowledge of engineering principles; suggest improvements to processes and standards.
  • Build positive working relationships and communicate effectively; maintain records and files.

The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.

Responsibilities
  • Guides, mentors, and reviews deliverables from project engineers throughout the life cycle of transmission projects.
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities where only limited standardization exists; handles differing situations which require searching for solutions within area of expertise.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects; applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit's competitive position.
  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and standards relevant to area of assignment. Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Coaches and mentors other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals.
Required/Basic Qualifications
  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience
  • Have a valid Professional Engineer's License (Prior to Hire Date)
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Skilled in line engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in PLS-CADD, MFAD/HFAD, L-Pile/A-Pile.
  • Understanding of typical transmission line project life cycles.
  • Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to mentor teammates of all skill levels, and build team chemistry
