This position is responsible for providing technical leadership for Dynamic Stability studies within Duke Energy Grid Stability & Advanced Studies. The successful candidate will serve as a subject matter expert for power system dynamic performance and advanced transmission studies supporting transmission expansion planning, large load interconnections, regulatory compliance, and special system investigations.

The Lead Engineer is the technical specialist level of the engineering hierarchy. Employees at this level provide leadership, technical direction, mentoring, and oversight for complex engineering programs and studies with broad organizational impact. The Lead Engineer is expected to exercise independent judgment, establish technical approaches, develop engineering processes and standards, and provide technical guidance to engineers across the organization. This role serves as a primary technical resource for dynamic stability studies and will provide support and guidance related to other advanced studies. This role represents Duke Energy in industry and regulatory forums.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical lead for Dynamic Stability studies supporting transmission planning, large load integration, and special system investigations.
  • Lead the development, execution, review, and technical approval of complex dynamic stability and advanced study analyses.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers performing dynamic stability and advanced transmission studies.
  • Establish and maintain study methodologies, modeling requirements, engineering processes, and technical standards related to dynamic performance assessments.
  • Lead compliance activities associated with applicable NERC Reliability Standards, including development and maintenance of supporting study methodologies and documentation.
  • Coordinate with developers of large load facilities, consultants, and equipment manufacturers to obtain, review, and validate dynamic and EMT models.
  • Support commissioning and field verification activities to ensure modeled equipment performance aligns with actual facility behavior and operating characteristics.
  • Lead technical evaluations associated with emerging reliability challenges, including inverter-based resources, computational loads, and oscillatory behavior.
  • Provide technical oversight and review of engineering work performed by consultants and internal engineering teams.
  • Represent Duke Energy on industry working groups, standards committees, regional reliability organizations, and other external technical forums.
  • Coordinate with Transmission Planning, Operations, Protection & Control, Generation, and other organizations to ensure consistent modeling assumptions and study practices.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, recommendations, and study findings to leadership, regulatory entities, customers, and industry stakeholders.
  • Support strategic initiatives
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and support the company's goals while representing Duke Energy in a professional manner.
Basic/Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree.
  • Professional Engineer License
  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Electrical Engineering degree
  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or Electric Power Systems.
  • Engineering experience in transmission planning, power system studies, or related electric utility functions.
  • Demonstrated experience performing and leading power system dynamic stability studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership for complex engineering assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and provide technical oversight of engineering work products.
  • Extensive experience with PSSE, PSCAD, TARA, or similar power system analysis tools.
  • Experience leading Dynamic Stability, EMT, oscillatory stability, and advanced transmission studies.
  • Experience supporting transmission planning assessments under NERC TPL standards.
  • Working knowledge of NERC Reliability Standards including TPL-001, MOD-026, MOD-027, MOD-032, and MOD-033.
  • Experience supporting generator and large load interconnection studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and mentor engineers.
  • Experience presenting technical information to leadership, regulatory organizations, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project leadership and technical review skills.
Working Condidtions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
