Job summary

Duke Energy in Plainfield, IN, is seeking an Engineer I to support modeling activities within Distribution SCADA and ADMS applications for real-time grid monitoring and control.

You will develop and maintain scripts (Python, PowerShell, PERL, C#), create data models, and design UI content for Distribution Control Center operators. A BS in engineering is required; MS may be considered. Travel 5-15% may apply.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from ABET accredited program is required.
  • Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the BS.

  • Experience with relational databases such as MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL.

  • Strong communication and collaboration across teams.

The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

This position supports modeling activities within Distribution SCADA and Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) applications that enable real-time monitoring, analysis, and control of the electric distribution grid for Distribution Control Center operations. The role requires a foundational understanding of electric distribution systems and the ability to develop and maintain scripts and programs (e.g., Python, PowerShell, PERL, C#). The role includes creating, maintaining, validating, and testing data models with various tools in various formats that represent and simulate Dukes electric distribution grid. The role also includes creating and maintaining graphical UI content presented to the Distribution Control Center operators on the DSCADA and ADMS systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of well-defined problems in area of expertise, including issues related to SCADA and ADMS modeling, data integration, and application functionality supporting Distribution Control Center operations.
  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team, including prioritization and execution of modeling, scripting, and system support activities across SCADA and ADMS environments.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of moderate scope and complexity, including documentation of modeling logic, scripting solutions, data structures, and system configurations.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; projects and assignments are clearly defined with focus on development but must be able to complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with minimum impact on existing systems, including development, testing, and maintenance of scripts and tools that interact with SQL databases, process structured files (e.g., XML), and support SCADA/ADMS model builds and validations.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; demonstrates proficiency in technical competencies and has ability to interpret technical information and instructions, including understanding of electric distribution network fundamentals, grid devices, and their representation within SCADA and ADMS systems.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files, while collaborating with modeling, operations, IT, and engineering teams to support integrated grid applications and data flows.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally, contributing to the reliability and operational effectiveness of Distribution Control Center Systems through accurate modeling, automation, and continuous improvement efforts.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Experience creating scripts utilizing programming language and tools (python, power shell, PERL, C sharp, etc...).
  • Experience working with relational databases (MySQL, Microsoft SQL, PostgreSQL, etc...).
  • Experience working with graphical design tools to create UI content (single-line displays, data tabulars, etc...).
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good troubleshooting skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
  • Some business units may require visits to field sites and/or plants

Specific Requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with a preference for Electrical Engineering graduating no later than August 2027.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
