Job summary

Secretariat in Naperville, IL, seeks a Ph.D.-level engineer to join our Global Engineering and Scientific consulting team. You will plan and conduct technical investigations involving batteries and engineered products, coordinating laboratory testing, imaging, materials characterization, and electrochemical analyses.

You will interpret results, prepare technical reports for clients and attorneys, manage project plans, and mentor junior staff while traveling as needed for inspections and meetings

Qualifications

• PhD required in a relevant technical field as listed.
• Hands-on experience testing or characterizing batteries, battery materials, or battery systems.
• Proven experience in research and development, product evaluation, technical investigations, or failure analysis.
• Familiarity with electrochemical cycling, impedance, CT imaging, microscopy, or spectroscopy.
• Strong analytical judgment and ability to work independently with incomplete information.
• Excellent technical writing skills and ability to explain complex analyses to non-specialists.
• Experience managing projects or guiding other scientists/engineers.
• Experience in consulting, litigation support, IP matters, or expert report preparation is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct technical investigations involving batteries and other engineered products.
• Design and coordinate laboratory testing and failure analysis, including battery disassembly, imaging, materials characterization, and electrochemical testing as appropriate to the investigation.
• Interpret test results and identify potential failure mechanisms and additional data needs.
• Prepare technical reports and present findings to clients, attorneys, and technical audiences.
• Evaluate reports and data, identify assumptions, limitations, and questions for further analysis.
• Manage project tasks, schedules, and budgets while collaborating with specialists across engineering disciplines.
• Develop relationships with clients and colleagues and contribute to practice growth.
• Travel as needed for inspections, testing, meetings, and other project work.
