Coquí Power LLC (“Coquí Power”) is a Puerto Rico–based development firm focused on generation, capacity, and transmission infrastructure assets. Our mission is to accelerate the deployment of critical U.S. energy infrastructure while prioritizing the use of domestically manufactured products to strengthen national energy security. Coqui Power is an affiliate of Energy Transition Capital Management LLC (ETCM). From early-stage development through the full project lifecycle, Coquí Power integrates project origination, development, finance, and asset management capabilities. Our growing portfolio of solar and energy storage projects is designed to transform Puerto Rico’s energy landscape by addressing the island’s urgent need for reliable, affordable, and clean power—supporting economic growth and benefiting some of the lowest-income ratepayers in the United States.
The Role:
Coquí Power is seeking a Lead Project Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) & Solar to serve as the Owner’s technical subject matter expert on battery energy storage and photovoltaic (PV) system design and integration for its portfolio. During the pre-Final Investment Decision (FID) phase, this role supports the 30% Engineer of Record (EOR) review, provides technical input to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) alignment and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) request for proposal (RFP) preparation, and contributes to BESS and PV technical specifications. Post-FID, the role manages OEM technical coordination, reviews EPC detailed engineering for BESS and PV scopes, and oversees factory acceptance testing (FAT). This is a hybrid position with travel to Puerto Rico required as needed. A relocation package may be available for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the 30% EOR design review for Firm’s portfolio: provide technical input on BESS container integration, PV direct current/alternating current (DC/AC) ratio assumptions, and Balance of Plant (BoP) interface requirements.
- Contribute to PV technical specifications, BESS technical specifications, and general employer requirements related to energy storage and solar generation.
- Coordinate original equipment manufacturer (OEM) technical alignment for PV module and BESS suppliers: review technical submittals, integration assumptions, and warranty interface requirements.
- Provide technical input to engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) request for proposal (RFP) scope for BESS and PV scopes, support bid clarification responses, and technical evaluation of EPC bids.
- Review PVsyst energy modeling assumptions; validate BESS dispatch strategy and degradation assumptions with the Senior Engineering Manager.
- Post-FID: manage BESS OEM and PV OEM technical performance; review detailed engineering deliverables (60% through Issued for Construction (IFC)) for BESS and PV scopes.
- Coordinate BESS FAT and site commissioning activities; develop test procedures and track defect resolution.
- Provide technical input to the design basis for BESS control modes, power conversion, thermal management, and safety system requirements.
- Support interconnection studies review for parameters specific to BESS grid-forming/grid-following capabilities and PV inverter requirements.
- Maintain technical interface coordination between BESS OEM, PV OEM, and EPC to prevent integration conflicts and late-stage surprises.
Qualifications:
- 8+ years of engineering experience on utility-scale energy projects; minimum 4 years focused on BESS systems, PV systems, or alternating current (AC)-coupled hybrid plants.
- Deep technical knowledge of BESS system architecture: lithium-ion chemistry, power conversion systems (PCS), thermal management, safety standards (Underwriters Laboratories 9540 (UL 9540)/National Fire Protection Association 855 (NFPA 855)), and controls integration.
- Experience reviewing PVsyst models, PV equipment specifications, and DC/AC ratio optimization for large-scale solar arrays.
- Familiarity with BESS OEM offerings (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), Build Your Dreams (BYD), Fluence, or equivalent) and PV module/inverter supplier commercial and technical interfaces.
- Experience supporting or leading FAT procedures and factory/site integration testing for BESS systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required; professional experience with utility-scale BESS project delivery strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority/LUMA Energy (PREPA/LUMA) grid requirements for storage dispatch and PV interconnection a plus.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred for site and OEM coordination.
Compensation:
- Competitive compensation commensurate with experience.
- Performance-based bonus, including the potential for meaningful profit participation.
- Comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, dental, and 401(k).
