Job summary

Hum seeks an Embedded Hardware & Firmware Engineer in Austin, TX to lead hardware development for next-generation IoT sensors in rail tech. You will design, implement, and optimize low-power hardware and firmware, driving integration of wireless protocols and robust testing.

As a key early hire, you will shape hardware standards, collaborate across teams, and mentor others while delivering scalable hardware solutions for harsh industrial environments.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in embedded hardware and firmware engineering, focused on IoT or sensor tech.
• Experience with ultra-low power device design and low-power management techniques.
• Experience with LoRa and BLE, including protocol customization and performance tuning.
• Strong understanding of vibration analysis and signal processing for predictive maintenance.
• Proficiency with C/C++ for MCU-based platforms (ARM Cortex-M), RTOS (FreeRTOS/Zephyr) and bare-metal programming.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain hardware and firmware for next-gen IoT sensors in rail transportation.
• Develop ultra-efficient low-power management to extend device lifespan.
• Drive integration and optimization of LoRa and BLE for long-range, low-energy comms.
• Lead PCB design from schematic to multi-layer layout in Altium with EMC/EMI rules.
• Lead board bring-up and debugging with oscilloscope, logic analyzers, spectrum analyzers.
• Design and refine filtering to improve signal quality in noisy environments.
• Establish hardware/firmware development best practices, including code quality and testing.
• Debug complex system-level issues across hardware-firmware boundaries.
• Influence tech roadmap by evaluating emerging IoT/sensor tech.
