Lead Electrical Systems Design Engineer - Role Description
This is a full-time position for a Lead Electrical Systems Design Engineer based in the United States. The role is ideal for candidates with extensive electrical power systems design experience in commercial nuclear power generation, advanced reactor technologies, and industrial applications who are passionate about developing next-generation nuclear energy systems.
The Lead Electrical Systems Design Engineer will be responsible for leading the design, specification, integration, and optimization of electrical power systems supporting Hadron Energy's advanced nuclear power platform. This individual will provide technical leadership in AC and DC power system architecture, electrical generation technologies, battery systems, and balance-of-plant electrical equipment. Working closely with the System Design leadership, this engineer will direct detailed electrical design activities and coordinate across I&C engineers, component design engineers, mechanical engineers, vendors, and external engineering partners to develop efficient, reliable, and cost-effective electrical systems that support commercial deployment and regulatory compliance.
You will lead design innovation initiatives, interface directly with NRC and other regulatory agencies on technical and licensing matters, and mentor junior engineers while fostering a collaborative design environment with internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Lead the electrical systems design team in developing comprehensive AC and DC power architectures for commercial nuclear plants
- Direct the design, specification, and integration of electrical generation technologies, switchyard systems, high and low voltage power distribution, and emergency power systems
- Develop equipment specifications and design requirements for electrical generators, transformers, switchgear, battery systems, power conversion equipment, and supporting electrical infrastructure
- Perform electrical analyses, sizing calculations, equipment selection studies, and power flow assessments to optimize system reliability and efficiency
- Lead battery technology evaluation, selection, and qualification activities including VRLA, lithium, and emerging battery chemistries for safety and control systems
- Interface directly with NRC and other regulatory agencies on electrical systems design basis, regulatory compliance, and technical questions throughout the licensing process
- Coordinate electrical design activities with plant design engineers, I&C specialists, mechanical engineers, and licensing professionals to ensure proper system integration and compliance
- Support vendor selection, technical evaluations, bid reviews, and procurement activities for major electrical equipment packages
- Provide engineering oversight for substantial subcontracted electrical design scope and review supplier calculations, equipment documentation, and technical reports
- Conduct trade studies to improve efficiency, reliability, manufacturability, constructability, and lifecycle cost of electrical systems
- Support development of electrical one-line diagrams, cable routing, equipment layouts, electrical specifications, and comprehensive engineering documentation
- Lead design innovation efforts and identify opportunities for simplification, standardization, modularization, and cost reduction across electrical systems
- Mentor and develop junior electrical engineers and support knowledge transfer across the organization
- Participate in design reviews, equipment qualification activities, testing programs, and startup planning efforts
Qualifications & Skillsets
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline; Master's or PhD is a plus
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience in electrical power systems design, electrical generation, or commercial power plant applications
- Demonstrated expertise in AC power systems across multiple voltage classes (low, medium, and high voltage) and DC power system design
- Strong knowledge of electrical generation technologies, including turbine-generators, fuel cells, or alternative generation sources
- In-depth experience with battery technologies (VRLA, lithium, advanced chemistries), battery management systems, and uninterruptible power supply design
- Proficiency with electrical design tools such as ETAP, SKM, AutoCAD, or equivalent power systems analysis and CAD software
- Thorough knowledge of NRC regulations (10 CFR 50, 10 CFR 52), IEEE electrical standards and regulatory requirements for nuclear plant electrical systems
- Experience with commercial nuclear power plant design, licensing, or operation in the United States or internationally
- Proven track record leading design teams, managing engineering scope, and coordinating across internal and external organizations
- Experience interfacing with regulatory agencies on design basis and technical matters
- Strong experience reviewing supplier designs, calculations, and technical documentation for compliance and accuracy
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills with ability to develop clear design documentation and regulatory submittals
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering
- Passion for clean energy innovation, advanced nuclear technologies, and developing practical engineering solutions for commercial deployment
- Experience supporting factory acceptance testing (FAT), equipment qualification activities, and startup planning is highly desirable
- Familiarity with small modular reactor (SMR), advanced reactor electrical design, or manufacturing-focused design optimization is a plus
