Role Overview

We are seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer to own the electrical architecture, integration, and requirements for our self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles — from the high-voltage (HV) energy system through vehicle wiring to the control electronics that tie the vehicle into the autonomy stack. This is a technical leadership role: you set the direction for a team of 4–6 electrical engineers and carry the hardest calls across four areas — high-voltage energy storage, distribution, and conversion, including charging and motor control; the vehicle's electronic control units (ECUs) and remote I/O modules; wire harness and low-voltage power, communications, and sensing; and traction inverters and powertrain electrical integration. We are an integrator: we specify and qualify supplied electronic and energy-storage hardware rather than designing boards or battery packs in house. Where the hardware is supplied, the requirements and the integration are still yours to own, concept through production and into the field. Breadth is the defining characteristic of the role — the same person owns all four areas.

This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. Alongside leading the electrical team, you'll work cross-functionally on project teams of 3–10 engineers drawn from multiple disciplines, and engage in occasional domestic travel for testing, integration, demonstrations, and customer interactions.

Key Responsibilities

• Leadership & Mentoring: Lead the technical direction of a team of 4–6 electrical engineers — day-to-day tasking, design review, technical mentoring, and skill development — and unblock the team on its hardest electrical problems.

• Design & Architecture: Own electrical architecture across high-voltage energy systems, control units and remote I/O, harness and low-voltage distribution, and traction/motor control electronics; make the critical trade-offs on performance, cost, and schedule.

• Requirements Ownership: Define and own the functional and performance requirements for every electrical component and system on the vehicle, and carry them through integration and validation — including for hardware we buy rather than build.

• High-Voltage & Energy Systems: Direct the architecture and integration of HV energy storage, distribution, and conversion, including charging and motor control, isolation, and electrical safety for traction-class energy systems.

• Control Unit Development: Drive the vehicle's ECUs and remote I/O modules from requirements through supplier selection, integration, bring-up, and validation, including the transition from prototype hardware to qualified production units.

• Harness Development: Own harness architecture, routing, connector selection, and harness documentation in RapidHarness, along with the low-voltage power, communications, and sensing that tie the HV system into vehicle controls, perception, and safety.

• Testing & Validation: Set the team's design, test, and validation standards; take electrical hardware from concept through design validation and into production, including EMC/EMI mitigation on high-power drivetrains.

• Collaboration & Supplier Management: Serve as the primary electrical point of contact to systems, software, mechanical, and manufacturing leadership; ensure clean hardware/software interfaces; own critical-component supplier relationships and contract-manufacturer partnership for electronics and harness builds.

• Lifecycle Support: Own electrical release and change control, resolve issues on fielded systems, and drive root-cause analysis to closure across the product lifecycle.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary: $125,000 – $150,000 plus equity

About You: Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

• At least a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.

• 8+ years of electrical engineering and design experience for vehicles or complex industrial equipment, including time in a technical leadership role.

• Demonstrated technical leadership of a team of engineers — day-to-day tasking, design review, technical mentoring, and skill development.

• Hands-on ownership across all three of: electronic control unit or embedded hardware development, whether designed in house or specified and qualified with suppliers; wire harness and low-voltage distribution design; and high-voltage energy storage or power-conversion systems.

• Experience taking electrical hardware from concept through design validation and into production.

• Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; ability to develop innovative and novel approaches.

• Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment, as an individual contributor and as a leader.

• Fluent in both written and verbal English.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below:

• Experience in directly applicable industry or projects, such as Rail, Electric Vehicles, Automotive, Heavy Machinery, or Aerospace.

• Specifying and qualifying supplied electronic hardware: requirements definition, supplier selection, qualification testing, and driving prototype hardware to qualified production units.

• Requirements management for vehicle electrical systems, including functional and performance requirements traceable through integration and validation.

• High-voltage battery pack design and battery management system (BMS) development for traction applications, including isolation monitoring, contactor control, and pre-charge. We integrate and qualify these systems rather than design them, so this depth is a bonus rather than a daily duty.

• Traction inverter and motor control electronics, and EMC/EMI design and mitigation on high-power drivetrains.

• Vehicle network and controller integration (CAN, Ethernet).

• Functional-safety or rail-industry standards practice.

• Harness design and documentation in RapidHarness or an equivalent harness-engineering tool.

• Harness manufacturing and DFM partnership with contract manufacturers.

• Electrical release and change control in a PLM/PDM system.

• Demonstrated experience working across organizational boundaries with other engineering disciplines at a leadership level.

Typical Education and Experience

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor and/or Master) and typically 8 or more years' related work experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master + 6 years' related work experience).
